About Take Command: What We Do and How Our HRA Platform Works

This article is for employers, employees, and benefits partners who want to understand what Take Command does and how our platform works.

Written by Ryan H

Take Command is a health benefits administration platform that helps employers offer and manage QSEHRA and ICHRA benefits so employees can receive tax-advantaged reimbursements for health insurance and eligible medical expenses.

What does Take Command do?

Take Command provides software and services that help employers offer health reimbursement arrangements (HRAs), including QSEHRA and ICHRA.

In practice, we help employers:

  • Design and manage HRA benefit plans

  • Reimburse employees tax-free for health insurance and eligible medical expenses

  • Ensure compliance with IRS and ACA rules

  • Provide employees tools to shop for and enroll in individual health insurance

  • Process and verify reimbursement claims

  • Provide annual PCORI fee estimates to help employers complete their IRS Form 720 filing obligation — a covered-lives estimate is sent each June ahead of the July 31 deadline.

We combine technology, compliance infrastructure, and employee support to simplify health benefits administration.

How does Take Command help employers?

Employers use Take Command to manage health benefits without running a traditional group health insurance plan.

We help employers:

  1. Design an HRA benefit that fits their budget and workforce

  2. Set eligibility rules and employee classes (for ICHRA)

  3. Onboard employees and manage enrollment workflows

  4. Provide required tax and compliance documentation

  5. Track reimbursements and allowances

  6. Generate reporting for payroll and IRS requirements

Employers stay in control of costs while employees choose the health plans that work best for them.

How does Take Command help employees?

Employees use Take Command to manage their health benefits and reimbursements.

Employees can:

  • Shop for ACA-compliant individual health insurance plans

  • Upload proof of coverage

  • Submit reimbursement claims for eligible expenses

  • Track reimbursement status in their member portal

  • Receive support from enrollment specialists if needed

This helps employees choose coverage based on their personal healthcare needs instead of a one-size-fits-all group plan.

Does Take Command handle dental and vision coverage?

Take Command does not sell or administer dental or vision insurance plans directly. However, depending on your employer's HRA plan design: Employees should first review their health plan’s summary of benefits to verify if dental and vision coverage is included. If unsure, they can contact their insurance carrier directly for confirmation.

  • Dental and vision insurance premiums may be reimbursable through your ICHRA or QSEHRA as standalone eligible expenses.

  • You can purchase dental or vision coverage from any carrier and submit premiums for reimbursement if your plan allows it.

  • Your employer determines whether dental and vision are reimbursable — check with HR or contact Customer Experience to confirm what your specific plan covers.- If your medical plan already includes dental or vision benefits, separate prompts for standalone plans may not appear during enrollment.- If dental or vision options are not visible in the portal, you can still purchase plans directly from carriers and upload proof of coverage for reimbursement.- Use the "Recurring Premium +" feature in the Take Command portal to set up automatic reimbursements for dental and vision premiums after uploading proof of coverage.- Partner carriers such as Renaissance Dental, VSP, and AmFirst offer standalone dental and vision plans. Renaissance Dental provides plans based on ZIP code, age, and family size; VSP offers competitive vision plans; and AmFirst includes both dental and vision options with no waiting periods for direct plans.- Visit the federal marketplace (healthcare.gov) to shop for and compare standalone dental and vision plans.

  • Some plans may include pediatric dental and vision benefits but exclude adult coverage. Review the plan’s summary of benefits for age-specific inclusions.

  • If your current health plan does not meet your needs, consider switching to a plan that includes dental and vision benefits or purchasing standalone coverage.

  • Schedule an enrollment call with a Take Command specialist via the Employee Resources section for assistance in comparing and enrolling in standalone plans.

What happens to my HRA access if my employer stops using Take Command?

If your employer stops using Take Command:

  • Future reimbursement administration becomes your employer's responsibility.

  • Your portal access may be deactivated — contact your HR or benefits administrator for instructions on submitting any outstanding claims.

  • If you need historical data or reports and no longer have portal access, contact Customer Experience — they may be able to provide prior-period documents directly.

What is the difference between QSEHRA and ICHRA?

Both are employer-funded HRAs, but they have key differences:

  • QSEHRA (Qualified Small Employer HRA): for small employers with fewer than 50 full-time employees. Contribution limits are set annually by the IRS. All employees in the same class receive the same allowance.

  • ICHRA (Individual Coverage HRA): available to employers of any size. No contribution limits. Employers can create different employee classes (full-time, part-time, seasonal, etc.) with different allowance amounts.

  • ICHRA requires employees to have qualifying individual health insurance to receive reimbursements. QSEHRA has a broader coverage requirement — employees must have Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC).

Contact Customer Experience if you have questions about which HRA type your employer offers or whether your insurance coverage qualifies for reimbursement.

What is an HRA (QSEHRA or ICHRA)?

A Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) is an employer-funded benefit that reimburses employees for health insurance and qualified medical expenses.

Take Command supports:

  • QSEHRA → For small employers

  • ICHRA → For employers of any size

Both allow employers to set a monthly allowance while employees choose their own insurance plans.

What makes Take Command different?

Take Command is built specifically for HRA-based benefits and focuses on simplifying both compliance and employee experience.

Key differences include:

  • End-to-end HRA administration (design, enrollment, reimbursement, reporting)

  • Built-in compliance verification for IRS and ACA rules

  • Employee enrollment and insurance shopping support

  • Dedicated support for both employers and employees

  • Flexible benefit design across different employee groups

Who uses Take Command?

Take Command serves:

  • Small businesses offering QSEHRA benefits

  • Mid-sized and large employers using ICHRA

  • Remote and distributed teams across all 50 states

  • HR teams and benefits administrators

  • Insurance brokers and benefits consultants

We support organizations transitioning away from traditional group health insurance models.

What happens when an employee leaves the company?

When employment ends:

  • The employer terminates the employee's HRA eligibility in the Admin Portal.

  • Employees generally retain portal access for up to 90 days to submit claims for eligible expenses incurred while they were covered.

  • Expenses incurred after the HRA eligibility end date are not reimbursable, even if submitted during the runout window.

  • The employer is responsible for any continuation requirements outside of Take Command.

Why does Take Command exist?

Take Command was created to simplify health benefits by giving employers more predictable costs and employees more choice in their healthcare coverage.

Our mission is to make health benefits:

  • Easier to understand

  • Easier to administer

  • More flexible for employees

  • More predictable for employers

We believe employers should be able to offer meaningful health benefits without the complexity of traditional group health insurance.

Key takeaway

Take Command is a health benefits administration platform that helps employers offer and manage QSEHRA and ICHRA benefits. We provide HRA administration, compliance support, reimbursement processing, enrollment tools, and employee support to help employers deliver flexible health benefits and help employees access health coverage.

Common questions about Take Command

Does Take Command pay my reimbursements directly?

No. Take Command is the administrator — we review and approve reimbursement claims, provide reimbursement reports to employers, and maintain compliance documentation. Your employer issues reimbursement payments to you directly, through payroll or another payment method. Take Command does not transfer funds or send payments to employees.

Does Take Command manage my health insurance policy?

No. Take Command is not an insurance company. We help you shop for and enroll in individual health insurance and administer the HRA reimbursement process, but we do not own, manage, or control your health insurance policy. Your insurance carrier manages your policy, handles claims for medical services, and issues insurance cards. For questions about your specific plan benefits, in-network providers, claim denials from your insurer, or coverage details — contact your insurance carrier directly.

Can Take Command cancel my health insurance?

No. Only you (as the policyholder) or your insurance carrier can cancel your health insurance policy. Take Command can update your HRA records after cancellation, but cannot cancel a policy on your behalf. Contact your carrier directly to cancel coverage.

What does 'HRA Hub' mean — is that the same as Take Command?

HRA Hub is the name of the employee-facing Member Portal within the Take Command platform. When you sign in to your employee account (at app.takecommandhealth.com/member-portal), you are accessing HRA Hub. 'Take Command' refers to the company and full platform; HRA Hub is specifically the employee experience within it.
