Definition
When a team gains possession of the ball inside the opposition’s 22-metre area. This can occur through open play, a kick return, or a set piece such as a lineout following a penalty.
A 22m entry is a key attacking statistic (often called "Visits to 22") used to measure how often a team enters this scoring zone. How many points a team scores from these entries (points per entry, PPE) shows how effectively they convert attacking pressure into points.
Any time Team A gains possession of the ball beyond Team B’s 22m line, it must be coded as a 22m entry for Team A. This includes carrying the ball over the 22m line or entering via a penalty kick to a lineout.
How to Code
Step 1: Identify that a 22m entry has occurred.
A 22m entry occurs when a team gains possession of the ball inside the opposition’s 22-metre area. In the example below, the Black (opposition) team enters the 22 through a penalty kick that results in a lineout inside the opposition’s 22m line.
Step 2: Label the 22m entry.
A) Opposition team makes a 22m entry: Press "2" (Opposition Possession) > Press "E" (22m Entry). Ensure the timeline matches when the player entered the 22m area.
B) Your team makes a 22m entry: Press "1" (Your Team Possession) > Press "E" (22m Entry). Ensure the timeline matches when the player entered the 22m area.
Important to Remember
Q: How do I correctly identify the 22m line?
A: Make sure you correctly identify the 22m line and do not confuse it with the 10m line. The 22m line often has flags on the touchline at each end, which can help you identify it.
