Introduction to Data Entry
This involves watching rugby footage, using your knowledge of the sport and our coding system to label the events accurately as they appear, and correctly assigning those events to players.
How to complete Data Entry
Step 1: Open the Editor and Configure Your Settings
When you first open the editor, you will see the main screen. Before you start coding, configure your settings using the options at the top of the screen:
Full Screen: Toggle full-screen mode on or off depending on your preference.
Tablet Mode: This option makes it easier to code on an iPad. Keep this turned off if you are using a laptop.
Video Quality: Adjust the video quality. Set this to 1080p if you have a good internet connection for the best viewing experience.
Language: Select your preferred language to translate the interface.
Tip: Set your video quality to 1080p before you begin. Clearer video means fewer mistakes when identifying players and events.
Step 2: Print Out the Keyboard Shortcuts Page
The editor includes a full keyboard shortcuts page for every interaction. It is mandatory that every analyst prints this out and keeps it beside them while working. Using keyboard shortcuts will make you significantly faster at coding games.
Step 3: Understanding the Timeline
The timeline is tucked away by default. Most of the time, you will be coding using only the keyboard and will not need to look at the timeline. However, if you want to check your work or see where you are in the match, press the Down Arrow key to reveal it.
Key points about the timeline:
The timeline only shows 5 minutes before and 5 minutes after the section you have been assigned to code. You do not need to scroll through the entire game.
Use Alt + Scroll to zoom in and out on the timeline.
Always follow the timestamp shown at the top of the screen to make sure you are coding the correct section of the match.
Tip: If you are ever unsure whether you are in the right section, check the timestamp at the top of the screen. Your assigned window is clearly marked.
Step 4: Player Identification (Q Panel)
Press Q to open the player identification panel. This panel shows images of players along with their jersey numbers. This information is shared with everyone working on the same game, so any photos added will be visible to all analysts.
How to use the player panel:
Press Q at any time to quickly open the panel and identify a player by their jersey number.
At the beginning of the game, if no player photos are available yet, tab through the video and take photos of all the players. This will save you a lot of time later when coding events.
Once photos are added, you can quickly match a player in the footage to their jersey number without pausing to search.
Tip: Spending a few minutes at the start of your session photographing all visible players will dramatically speed up your coding for the rest of the game.
Step 5: Entering Events / Codes
To enter an event, press 1 or 2 on your keyboard to open the event entry menu. This is the same menu as the previous version of the editor, but now it will recommend keyboard shortcuts for common events so you can work faster.
Example β Coding a Pause:
Press P on your keyboard to start a pause event.
Highlight the relevant player in the panel.
Enter the player's jersey number.
Click Save (or press Enter).
The event will appear on the timeline.
After saving an event, you can hover over it on the timeline to see the player details. This is useful for quality assurance (QA) when reviewing your work.
Step 6: Navigating the Video
You can control video playback entirely from the keyboard:
Play / Pause: Use the play shortcut to start and stop the video.
1-Second Skip: Use the left and right arrow shortcuts to jump 1 second backward or forward.
Frame-by-Frame: Use the frame backward and frame forward shortcuts to move one frame at a time for precise positioning.
Fast Scan: Hold down the comma key (,) to quickly scan forward through the footage.
Slow Review: Hold down the dot key (.) to slowly step forward frame by frame, which is ideal for closely watching a specific passage of play.
Tip: Holding a navigation key down turns it into a continuous action. This is much faster than repeatedly tapping.
Step 7: Checking your Work
Once you have finished coding your section, take a moment to review your work:
Hover over events on the timeline to confirm the correct player and jersey number are attached to each event.
Use the Down Arrow key to reveal the timeline and visually scan for any gaps or misplaced events.
Replay key moments using the frame-by-frame controls (dot key) to verify accuracy.
