How to request a new DBS-Friendly role title

When creating a DBS check, choosing the right job title is essential. A DBS-friendly role title helps the Disclosure & Barring Service understand what the applicant does, who they work with, and where - so your check can be approved quickly.

If you can’t find a suitable title, or you’re unsure which one to use, we’re here to help.

What is a DBS-friendly role title?

A DBS-friendly role title clearly shows:

✅ What they do

✅ Who they work with

✅ Where they will be

Support Worker

Adults

Residential Care

Surveyor

Children

Schools

Cleaner

Children

Primary School

Example: 'Support Worker – Adult Residential Care' instead of 'Support Worker'.

Clear titles help avoid delays, vague or generic titles often get queried.

Why this matters

The job title is the only information the DBS sees about the role. If it isn’t clear who the applicant will be working with and why the check is needed, the application may be delayed while we request more information. We want your checks to move quickly, so using a DBS-friendly title makes a big difference.

No title needed for Basic checks

For Basic DBS checks, role titles are not required.

Please select from the menu: 'Basic DBS – no job title required'

How to check existing titles

We already have a large library of DBS-friendly role titles. If you'd like to review the current list for your organisation, just message us via live chat, we’re happy to send it to you.

When to request a new job title

Request a new title if:

  • You can’t find a DBS-friendly title in the list, or

  • You only have the recruitment/job advert title, and it doesn’t show who + where, or

  • You're unsure which DBS level applies and want us to confirm

We love when you check first, as it prevents delays later.

How to request a new DBS-friendly role title

  1. Message us in the platform (it's the chat icon in the bottom-right hand corner)

  2. Let us know you’d like a new DBS-friendly job title and we'll send you a short form to complete

  3. Provide key details:

    • What the role does

    • Who they work with (Children/Adults)

    • Where they work (school, care home, supported housing, etc.)

    • Any regulated activity, if known

The more context you can share up front, the faster we can help. We will then:

  • Confirm the correct DBS level

  • Suggest a DBS-friendly job title (or approve yours)

  • Add it to your organisation list for future use

Once it’s added, you can go ahead and submit your DBS application using the new title.
