🗣️ Speech-to-text outside of Tandem

Updated over 4 months ago

Tandem has a built-in speech-to-text function that can also be used outside of Tandem.

ⓘ To use this feature, you must run Tandem on your computer and not in a browser. Download Tandem by following this link →

(Currently only available on Microsoft Windows)

How to use:

  • Log in to Tandem.

  • Open the program you want to dictate text into (this can be, for example, your journal system, email client, or a Word document).

  • Place the cursor where you want the text to be written.

  • Press F1. This opens the dictation window, and you can start dictating your text.

On laptops, F1 and F2 may be assigned to adjust settings such as brightness or volume. To activate the shortcuts, hold down the "Fn" key while pressing F1 or F2. If you'd like to use a different key to open and start dictation, you can change this in your Tandem settings.

  • Press F1 again to stop dictation, or click the stop button in the dictation window.

  • Your dictated text appears in the dictation window. You can edit the text if you want to make any changes.

  • Press F2 to transfer the text to where your cursor is focused. This will move the text from the dictation window, and the window will minimize. The text is also cleared from the window.

To bring the text back into the dictation window, click the restore icon.

  • You can also copy the text to your computer’s clipboard. Just click the copy icon.

Then paste the text wherever you like by pressing Ctrl+V.

Close and settings

  • The dictation window uses the same microphone you have set in Tandem. To change this, click the menu icon.

Here you can select to close the dictation window completely or access the settings. In the settings, you can customize the keyboard shortcuts for the dictation window (the default shortcuts are F1 and F2).

Tip: Minimize the dictation window by clicking this icon:

This will reduce the size of the dictation window, allowing it to stay on the screen without taking up much space.
