Setting up your round correctly is critical to get the most out of Tangent Golf. Whether you are playing with friends, need to be in tournament mode, or starting on hole 7 in a Shotgun start... Tangent Golf has all the quick setup options to get you focused on the first tee.

First, let's cover the basics of the Round Setup screen.

  • The Course Header

  • Selecting your Tee - This is the tee box you'll be playing from today. This sets the course slope and rating that will be used to calculate your handicap. It is also the default tee that will be used for your tee shot if the Tangent Golf auto detection cannot find a tee shot. Simply swipe left to right and tap on a tee to select it. Keep in mind that the course rating and slope will be different depending on if you have selected 'Male' or 'Female' as your reference.

  • Selecting your Round Type - There are 5 round types in Tangent Golf which each have slightly different impacts on the functionality or data from a round:

    1. Social - This is a standard round of golf alone or with friends. Full functionality of the app with no data exclusions.

    2. Tournament - This is a tournament round of golf in which caddy functionality (including weather and elevation) will be disabled to make the app compliant as a distance measuring device both on the phone and the watch apps.

    3. Competitive - This is is a competitive round where you are trying to score, but with no tournament limitations. Use this to filter analytics to see how you perform under pressure. Full functionality enabled.

    4. Practice - Use this mode if using shot tracking to track a scramble or any other type of round that you don't want to count towards your stats or handicap. Full functionality enabled.

    5. Simulator Mode - Use this mode to track a round of golf played on a simulator to manually input shots or using your watch. See our simulator tutorial on how to use this mode.

  • Selecting your Scoring Type - There are 6 scoring types in Tangent Golf which are essentially Gross and Net versions of 3 scoring types.

    1. Stroke Play - Your standard every shot counts. If you took 6 strokes, your score is a 6.

    2. Stroke Net - Every shot counts, but you get credit for your handicap. Your hole by hole scores will be adjusted via the course handicap calculated based on your playing ability. This uses Tangent Golf's handicap calculation based on tracked rounds and scores.

    3. Match Play - You vs. Friends. Each hole is it's own battle. Whoever takes the least strokes wins the hole. Whoever wins the most holes, wins the match.

    4. Match Play - Same as above, but with course handicaps applied to all players. Your friends 5 net 4 will beat your 5.

    5. Stableford - Each score is worth points (ex. Eagle - 5, birdie - 2, par - 1, bogey or worse - 0). The most points wins.

    6. Stableford Net - Same as above, but using net score with handicap to apply points.

  • Adding Friends - If you have requested friends and they have accepted your invite, you can add them to your round to keep their score yourself, or to link rounds tracked on each individuals personal device for shared scorecards and stats. Don't have any friends yet? Invite them to get free access and have more friends to play with!

  • Selecting your Starting Hole - This is the first hole that will load when the round launches. Ideal for skipping holes for those Shotgun starts.

You're all set. Hit start round to open the GPS and start playing!
