How does the PAR Golf app work in the background to track your golf?

If you've ever manually tracked stats, you know it can be tedious to mark up that scorecard and then at the end of the day you lose it or fail to aggregate stats over time to identify trends or areas to work on.

With PAR Golf you can put that pencil away. PAR Golf does all the heavy lifting to track every stat you could imagine including all those stats you see every week on the PGA Tour like Strokes Gained and average driving distance. All from the comfort of your pocket or golf bag while running in the background.

So how does PAR Golf work?

When you are getting ready to play a round, simply hit 'Play' from the PAR Golf home screen, setup your round and when the GPS view loads, the app immediately starts tracking and processing your data.

For starters, PAR Golf uses location data to log your 'footprints'. This is the location of everywhere your phone goes on the golf course. If your phone is in your pocket, then it is everywhere you went and every where you could have potentially hit a golf shot!

When you spend a longer period of time in a given location, PAR Golf uses other sensors available to it including, but not limited to, accelerometers, Apple Watch, GPS, etc. to detect signatures that look like golf swings.

These potential shot locations will typically get marked with an icon to indicate that the app has found something that might be a golf swing.

A 'Golf Cart' Icon indicates a location where you were waiting for a significant amount of time, however no swing was detected. This may be because you were waiting on a playing partner to hit or you may not have an Apple Watch and prefer not to have your phone in your pocket. These 'Golf Cart' areas are low confidence markers that will only be used for shots if there is a lack of higher confidence locations.

A 'Swing' Icon indicates a location where the app believes a swing occurred based no sensor data. The background color of this icon will change based on the confidence level of the sensor data.

  • white background - detected swing based on phone sensors (medium confidence)

  • blue background - detected swing based on Apple Watch sensors (high confidence)

  • green background - swing confirmed on Apple Watch by player (most confidence)

The app continuously collects and analyzes this data as you play for every hole you play.

When you enter a score for a given hole, the app uses the available data that was collected to properly place shots in the highest confidence areas. These place shots can be easily edited by tapping on the icon to make changes to shot data or long pressing and dragging the icon to move it's location.

When you're done with the round and have entered all your scores, made any edits necessary, PAR Golf then analyzes your round to turn shot data into easy to digest tips and statistics to help you focus your golf and play better... faster!
