A quick tutorial on how to set the pin location to improve the accuracy of Tangent Caddie recommendations

If you participate at all in golf twitter (X) then you've probably heard at least some combination of 1) stop aiming at pins and 2) aim for the center of the green.

(If you're not on Twitter / X, follow me here.)

I'll agree with #1... as a scratch player, I'm rarely aiming at pins. But #2 is too simplified, there are many times you should not be aiming at the center of the green either...

Luckily, rather than spending hours teaching you course management in this article (which I do on The Good Miss), Tangent's Caddie has you taken care of... So this article will tell you how to improve the Caddie recommendations by using our Pin Set function.

If you take a look at the above GIF, you'll see that Caddie's recommendations can change pretty dramatically based on the pin location for the day. Caddie is taking into account where the pin is, how far you hit each club, your dispersions, and then the location of hazards like the water on the left and the bunker to the right. Depending on flag location, this player should hit anywhere between 8 Iron up to 6 Iron and should aim anywhere from the middle of the green to well on the right hand side.

Middle of the green always just isn't the best plan.

Now most golf courses have some sort of pin location system to let you know where the pin is on a given day, some common ones:

1) Colored flags: Typically BLUE means BACK, WHITE means MIDDLE, and RED means FRONT.

2) A sectored graphic that looks something like the below where the course gives you a number for the day where the pin will be on that hole. "Today's pin location is 5", which means for any hole, the pin should be in the green section labeled with a 5.

3) A drawing of how many paces on and how many paces from the side the pin is, as well as green depth:

All you have to do is tap the 'Mark Pin' button on the phone or watch and translate the information you have to one of sectors available to you.

This is shown in detail in the watch tutorial:

If tapping a section doesn't give you exactly the result you want, you can always long press and drag the pin on the phone to get it exactly where it needs to be.
