What is a DNS record?

DNS (Domain Name System) records are a set of instructions that live in authoritative DNS servers. These records provide information about a domain including what IP address is associated with that domain and how to handle requests for that domain. The most common types of DNS records are CNAME, TXT, A, DKIM, DMARC, SPF, and MX.

Importance of adding DNS records in your email deliverability:

DNS records not only authenticate your sending IPs but also increase safety and security by protecting against spam and phishing attacks. These records ensure that your emails reach your recipient's inboxes.

Email Providers like Google and Yahoo are rolling out various regulations to protect their users from spam and phishing. These providers are emphasizing the importance of DNS recording while sending emails in bulk.

Here are the steps to add DNS record in GoDaddy:

Step 1: Visit the GoDaddy website (www.godaddy.com) and click on "Sign In" to log in to your account.

Step 2: To access your domain, click on your name on the top right corner and select the option “Manage My Products”.

Step 3: Under Domains, click on the option “Manage all” to manage your domain(s).

Step 4: Find the domain for which you want to add the DNS record and click on it.

Step 5: Under the Domain Portfolio, click on the DNS tab.

Step 6: Under DNS Records, click on the option “Add New Record”.

Step 7: Under the Type dropdown menu, choose the type of DNS record that you want to add.

Step 8: Fill in the DNS record's Name, Priority, and Value.

Note 💡:

  • Host: Enter the subdomain (e.g., "www" for www.example.com). You can leave it blank for the root domain.

  • Points To: Enter the destination or IP address for the record (e.g., the IP address of your web server).

  • TTL (Time to Live): Set the Time to Live value, which determines how long DNS servers will cache the record. You can use the default value or set a specific TTL.

Step 9: Click on "Save" or "Add Record" to create the new DNS record.

Step 10: If you need to add more DNS records, repeat steps 6 - 9 and configure the details for each record.

Here are the steps to edit an existing DNS record in GoDaddy:

Under the DNS management section, you can manage your existing list of DNS records. You can edit the existing record of a domain or even remove it. The common types of records are:

  • A Record: maps a domain to an IP address

  • CNAME Record: Alias of one domain to another

  • MX Record: Specifies mail servers for the domain

Step 1: To edit an existing record, click on the “Edit” icon at the end of each record.

Step 2: Enter the updated details in the record.

Step 3: Once you have entered the details, click on the “Save” or “Apply” button to save the changes.
