Messaging credits for SMS and WhatsApp

Learn how SMS and WhatsApp messaging credits are used, calculated, and purchased

When using Teamtailor's SMS feature or WhatsApp integration, messaging candidates requires credits. This guide explains how credits are used, how to check your balance, and how to purchase them.

Credit calculation

Although both SMS and WhatsApp use the same credit balance, the way credits are calculated differs between the two channels. The sections below explain how credits are charged for each messaging method.

SMS

When composing a SMS, a credit calculator appears in the bottom-left corner, showing the estimated cost in credits. The character count is displayed on the right, with a maximum of 1,440 characters per message. This helps you estimate the credit cost of your message.

Each incoming and outgoing SMS message costs a minimum of 1 credit. However, the exact number of credits varies depending on factors like message length, character type, and destination country. Keep in mind that emojis use more characters than standard text and may increase the cost.

Teamtailor does not charge for SMS replies from candidates. However, your mobile operator may charge additional fees for international messages.

WhatsApp

Each incoming and outgoing WhatsApp message costs 1 credit. An outgoing message can contain up to 1,024 characters.

Credit balance

Credits are required to send and receive both SMS and WhatsApp messages. If you run out of credits, you will no longer be able to send messages to your candidates. However, if a candidate replies after your balance reaches 0, you will still receive their message. Your credit balance will then become negative, and the outstanding credits will automatically be deducted the next time you top up your account.

You can monitor your available credits and add more at any time under Settings → Company → SMS / WhatsApp. You can choose to top up your credits either manually or automatically.

Billing

In-app purchases, such as messaging credits, are charged to the payment method you've added to your billing information. You can manage your billing settings under Settings → Company → Billing, where you can also update your payment method.

Purchase credits

To purchase additional credits, click Add more credits next to your current credit balance under Settings → Company → SMS / WhatsApp.

Select the credit package you want and click Purchase.

  • Small: 1,000 credits – USD 80

  • Medium: 2,500 credits – USD 180

  • Large: 10,000 credits – USD 600

Auto-renew credits

Automatically top up your credit balance when it reaches a specified threshold.

Click Edit auto-renew to change the number of credits added with each automatic renewal.
