Understanding the ISO 1406X Series (International Standard for GHG Emissions Inventories and Verification)
Updated over 2 weeks ago

The ISO 1406X series describes processes for assessing, monitoring, reporting, verifying, and validating GHG emissions. It is comprised of:

  • ISO 14064-1 (GHG emissions and removals for organizations – corporate level)

  • ISO 14064-2 (GHG emissions and removals for organizations – project level)

  • ISO 14064-3 (validation and verification of GHG statements)

  • ISO 14065 (requirements for verification bodies)

  • ISO 14066 (requirements for verifiers)

  • ISO 14067 (GHG emissions of products)

The Climate Label Certification Standard is largely aligned with ISO 14064-1, which is used for quantifying GHG emissions at the organizational level. ISO 14064-1 translates the requirements of the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard into ISO Standards.

ISO 14064-3 describes how to verify and validate reports of GHG emissions, reductions and removals. It is one of the standards that third-party verifiers may follow for large brands certifying under The Climate Label Certification Standard. (Alternatively, they can follow ISAE3000 and ISAE3410 from IAASB, or the Corporate GHG verification guidelines from the Environmental Resources Trust). For the detailed list of requirements for third-party verifiers, see Section 2d of The Climate Label Certification Standard.
