Science dictates that there is a limited time window in which to reduce emissions, if the global community is to avoid the most catastrophic effects of climate change. With each year that passes, continued investment will be needed to increase ambition and address remaining emissions.
β
Although the carbon fee is anticipated to increase annually, the successful reduction of emissions can counteract the increase in total costs to a certifying entity. In other words, a CTB in 2025 of $15,000 with 1,000 tonnes of emissions at $15/tonne could become a CTB of $14,400 in 2026 with 800 tonnes of emissions at $18/tonne.
β
Conversely, rising emissions will increase the CTB, and a rising carbon fee will provide a greater incentive to reduce emissions.
