Requirements for target setting
Updated over 2 weeks ago

Certifying entities with >$100m in annual revenue are required to set a target(s) to reduce emissions. Targets must:

  • Must cover Scope 1, 2, and 3 cradle-to-customer emissions: refer to the measurement boundary in Table 1 in the Certification Standard. Entities may have one target that covers all emissions, or separate targets for Scope 1+2 and Scope 3

    • Scope 1 and 2 targets must commit to absolute emissions reductions

    • Scope 3 targets may commit to absolute or intensity-based reductions

  • Must be near-term: completed within the next 5-10 years

  • Must be science-aligned: a commitment to reduce emissions in line with the science

    • Targets may follow the Exponential Roadmap’s “carbon law” of 50% reduction by 2030

    • Targets may be formally validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), following sector-specific guidance if required

  • May be 1.5°C or Well-below 2°C ambition level

Certifying entities with <$100m in annual revenue are strongly encouraged to set ambitious targets as well.

All targets reviewed and approved by the certification team will be reported on the company’s certification profile page.
