If your company facility produced more onsite energy than you consumed, you may be wondering if the excess electricity being returned to the grid can be treated as a market adjustment for your measurement submission.
According to GHG Protocol you must report total consumption (from on site systems and imported energy from the grid) during measurement. You cannot net out grid imports with energy that is exported (sold back) to the grid. Once energy is sold back to the grid you can no longer claim the rights to that renewable energy.
For example, if your company produced 100 kWh of electricity through onsite solar, consumed 50 kWh from the on-site system, consumed 70kWh from the grid, and returned the additional 50 kWh produced from the onsite system to the grid you would report 120 kWh as your consumption total. You may not report the excess 50 kWh that was returned to the grid as a market adjustment to reduce emissions from your grid consumption.
