You can create and manage your tax rate by visiting the Customize> Location Builder (BPro Settings)> Taxes page.
On the Taxes page, you can create new Tax Groups and Tax Rates, and edit exiting ones.
Tax Groups: Tax Groups are what you select on your jobs to apply the taxes. The groups contain the Tax Rate(s). You can have multiple tax rates within a group. ie. State & County Tax group> containing a rate for State Tax (6%), and another rate to calculate the County Tax (1.5%).
Tax Rates: Tax Rates control how much (%) tax is charged, against certain product categories in your system.
Creating a new Tax Group
Click 'Create New Tax Group'. Name your tax group so it is easy to select on your jobs. Set your tax group to be 'Default' if you want this tax to be the standard tax to automatcially apply to all of your new jobs. *Setting a tax group as default will not automatically apply it to pre-existing jobs*
Creating Tax Rates
Once the group is created, you can then create Tax Rates in it. Click 'Add Rate'.
Name: Name your tax rate how want it displayed on your invoices. ie. 'State Tax (6%)'
Rate (%): Enter the rate percentage. Rates can have decimals, ie. 6.25%
Tax Number: If you have a business tax number that you need to have displayed on your invoices, enter it here (optional).
Effective Dates: Select the start date for your tax rate to take effect. The is the date the rate will be eligible to apply to your jobs. (Jobs created before the start date will not be eligible to calculate the tax). Start dates can be back-dated. End dates are not required.
End dates can be used to set an expiry date on a tax rate. It will no longer calculate on jobs that get created after the end date.
Product Categories: Select the product categories that you want the tax to apply to. The tax rate will calculate on all products related to the categories. 'Select All' to quickly select all categories. This section allows you to control charging tax on some products/services but not others. ie. I charge tax on holiday lighting, but not on window cleaning. Click 'Create' to create the tax rate
You now have a tax group with tax rates. You can edit your tax rates anytime.
NOTE*: When a tax rate percentage changes, it is often best to deactivate the old rate by setting an end date. Then, create a new rate (with the new percentage) to take effect on the appropriate start date. NOTE** Editing the percentage of a rate that is actively assigned on existing jobs will affect the tax calculated on those jobs.
Your new tax group will now be selectable on your jobs.
Your tax rates will display nicely on your invoice templates.
