Water readings are so important to measure how much water you use to ensure you are billed correctly. Your water bill consists of two charges. The first is a standing charge which is a daily charge for getting the supply to your property. The second charge is for the amount of water you use. Included in the cost for the amount of water you consume is a sewage charge. The sewage charge is calculated based on how much water is consumed in the property.
Water companies don’t read water meters very often and so water bills are normally estimated based on previous use. These estimates are often wrong and result in you being charged for more water than you use. This is another reason why detecting any water leaks in your property is really important. Water leaks are most commonly detected after you leave your us, making it extremely difficult to contest any high water bills from the water company.
However, having regular water meter readings can ensure that you are not being overcharged for your water and also makes it easier to detect any leaks as well as contesting any over charges due to water leaks.
How to take a water meter reading
Taking a water meter reading is really easy. All you need to do is locate your meter, and take a clear and readable image of the water meter, showing the reading and the date the reading was taken. You can then enter these details in the form found in an email that we send you as a reminder to take your reading or in your customer portal.
How do I get the reading?
Your letting agent or landlord should give you a water reading and a photo of this in your opening inventory. It is their duty to provide this information to you, so if this is not the case please contact them. They should also let you know where your water meter is located.
If you are not confident in obtaining your water meter reading, you will need to ask your letting agent or landlord to complete this for you. If you are taking the reading yourself, you must ensure that you are taking a picture of the correct meter for water and for your property.
I have unlimited water, do I still need to send in water readings?
Having unlimited water is a great way to worry less about the amount of water you consume. However, water readings are vital to detect water leaks and without water readings, often go unnoticed. You are still responsible for taking the right course of action to fix a water leak even if you are on an unlimited tariff and with early detection we can usually reduce your bill significantly.
