📘 How to Read Your Water, Gas & Electricity Meters

At Bunch, we want to make managing your utilities as simple as possible. One key part of that is sending us accurate meter readings so we can ensure your bills reflect your actual usage — not estimates.

This guide will walk you through how to read your electric, gas, and water meters. Don’t worry if your meter looks a little different — we’ve included the most common types and examples.

🔌 Electricity Meters

Electricity meters come in different types: digital, dial, or smart.

1. Digital Meters

These display numbers on an LCD or LED screen.

Example reading:

Meter display: 03528.6
Reading to submit: 03528

Ignore any numbers after a decimal point or shown in red.

2. Dial Meters

These look like small clock faces.

Example:

  • Read the dials from left to right.

  • If the pointer is between two numbers, always choose the lower number.

  • If the pointer is exactly on a number, check the next dial to see if it has passed 0.

Only submit the first 5 dials, and skip any marked 1/10.

🔥 Gas Meters

Gas meters are often digital or dial as well, but the reading format differs slightly.

1. Digital (Imperial) Meters – show readings in cubic feet (ft³)

Example:

Meter display: 00437.9
Reading to submit: 00437

Ignore anything after the decimal point or in red.

2. Digital (Metric) Meters – show readings in cubic metres (m³)

Example:

Meter display: 00123.456
Reading to submit: 00123

➡ Again, just the first 5 numbers before the decimal.

3. Dial Gas Meters

  • Read from left to right.

  • Again, choose the lower number if the dial is between digits.

💧 Water Meters

Water meters typically show numbers in cubic metres (m³) and are usually digital or mechanical.

Example:

Meter display: 000154.390
Reading to submit: 000154

➡ The black numbers (or those before the decimal point) are what we need. Ignore any red or small digits after the decimal.

💡 Tip: You may need a torch or to lift a cover to access your water meter if it’s outside.

📸 Submitting Your Reading

The best way to submit your reading is to:

  1. Take a clear photo of the meter showing the reading.

  2. Email or upload it via your customer portal (if applicable).

  3. Include your MPAN/MPRN or account number to help us match it to your home.

🧠 Why It Matters

Submitting regular readings:

  • Avoids estimated bills 💸

  • Helps detect leaks or faults early 🔍

  • Ensures you're only paying for what you use ✅
