The Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) protects households by capping your typical energy tariffs. The EPG limits the amount a supplier can charge per unit of energy used. The EPG has been extended for a further 3 months from April to June 2023.
The figure of £2,500 per household which the EPG refers to is actually the estimated cost for what the government call a "typical household" with average consumption over the course of a year. This means a 2-3 bedroom property using 12,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of gas and 2,900 kWh of electricity per annum.
This is a little misleading how this has been presented, as it is in actual fact the unit price of your gas and electric which is capped. Not the total amount you would pay for a year.
Below is a link to the Ofgem which explains the Energy Price Guarantee in more detail and also a link to the government website detailing what the current unit prices are capped to.
