What is a bunion?

A bunion is a deviation of the big toe from the bone in the forefoot, causing the toe to move towards the midline of the foot or away from the midline of the body. It is not necessarily a bony growth, but rather a deviation of the phalanges in one direction and the metatarsal in the other direction.

What causes bunions?

Bunions can be caused by genetics, as well as other factors such as reduced dorsiflexion, which can cause a pronated foot posture and contribute to the formation of bunions. Unnatural footwear is also a contributing factor, especially when the shoe has a narrow toe box that squashes the toes and changes the positioning of the foot.

What should I do to resolve bunions?

To resolve bunions, it is important to address the underlying cause of the condition. This includes wearing natural footwear with a wide toe box, working on foot mechanics, and addressing movement patterns up the chain at the knee and hip. Stretching, massage, and other physical therapies may also be helpful in reducing pain and promoting healing. It is important to seek advice from a healthcare professional to determine the best treatment options for your individual situation.
