What is Ankle Impingement?

Ankle impingement is a blockage or pinching sensation that occurs at the front or back of the ankle. This happens when something is blocking the ankle from moving forward during ankle dorsiflexion.

What Causes Ankle Impingement?

Ankle impingement can be caused by various factors, including ankle sprains or injuries, bony growths in the joint, and damage to any muscle, joint, ligament, or tendon that contributes to ankle dorsiflexion. Unnatural footwear can also contribute to ankle impingement by reducing the ankle's ability to move in a regular dorsiflexion range.

What Should I Do to Resolve Ankle Impingement?

To resolve ankle impingement, it's important to get into natural footwear and allow your foot to move and your knee to pass over the toe normally. Targeted exercises that improve ankle mobility by addressing specific tissue problems can also help.
