What is Turf Toe?

Turf toe is an injury that occurs at the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint of the big toe. It happens when the toe is forced into a hyper-extended position, causing strain on the ligaments or capsule on the underside of the big toe. The injury is characterized by pain, swelling, and limited movement of the joint, particularly when weight-bearing or walking.

What Causes Turf Toe?

Turf toe can be caused by several factors, including the environment, such as turf that is firm and unforgiving, or reduced mobility of the big toe. Limited ankle mobility can also be a contributing factor, as it puts more force through the big toe, making it more susceptible to injury.

What Should I Do to Resolve Turf Toe?

To prevent turf toe, it's important to improve control and mobility in the big toe and ankle joints. Daily practices can help improve these areas and minimize the risk of turf toe. If you do experience turf toe, rest and ice can help reduce pain and swelling. It's also important to avoid weight-bearing activities until the injury has healed. In more severe cases, physical therapy or medical attention may be necessary.
