Use the common questions below for an answer about the use of dollars within a DAF to an approved charity recipient.
Can my DAF be used to pay for scholarships or tuition?
You may recommend grants to support a scholarship program administered by a
501(c)(3) public charity, but you may not earmark dollars to assist a specific individual.
Can my DAF be used to pay for an adoption, for a child sponsorship, or for other benevolence?
You may recommend grants to support a general adoption program, child sponsorship program, or other benevolence program administered by a 501(c)(3) public charity; but you may not earmark dollars to assist a specific individual. Please note that some 501(c)(3) public charities have child sponsorship programs through which you may be assigned a specific child to write or pray for but that donations are pooled to benefit a charitable class of children. If that is the case, you may include the child's name, with a purpose note such as the following: "to be used in support of the child sponsorship program, with a preference for John Doe."
How can my DAF support a missionary or a friend going on a mission trip?
For missionary support of an individual through an organization or church, the grant would be made to the organization or church, with a purpose note such as the following: “in support of Jane Smith's missionary efforts in carrying out the functions and purposes of XYZ Charity, ID #12345.”
Can my DAF grant to a college athletic fund?
You may recommend grants to support a college or university athletic program if your grant recommendation states that you waive (and you do, in fact, waive) all benefits, including priority seating at athletic events, ticket rights, and points.
Can my DAF make grants in honor of my friend’s fundraising efforts for a charity?
You may recommend a grant to a 501(c)(3) public charity in honor of an individual as
long as the charity exercises complete discretion and control over the donation and does not provide a benefit to that individual. When recommending your grant, utilize the “Special Recognition” option or use the “Purpose” box to specify, e.g., “in honor of [individual’s name]” or “in recognition of Jane Smith’s 5K race team.”
