Trying to get insurance with a driving conviction can be a bit of a nightmare. Many insurers won't even offer you a quote, and you may find the quotes you do get are very expensive.

Three ways to make your insurance more affordable

1. Drive with a connected device

With a driving conviction in your past, you're judged on that mistake and not on how you drive now. The way to prove you're not a big risk? Driving with a connected device.

You're obviously not in any hurry to get another driving conviction, so you're the perfect candidate for connected insurance. If you drive well for a year, you'll get a renewal that takes that into account.

2. Check your No Claims Discount

As long as your driving conviction wasn't related to damage to your vehicle, the NCD you'd earned at the time you cancelled your insurance policy is still yours.

Your last insurer will have let you know your NCD entitlement when you left them.

Keep in mind:

  • NCD is in full policy years

  • Your NCD is valid for two years after your last policy ended

3. Be realistic with your car choice

One of the biggest factors in your insurance price - after your conviction - is the car you choose.

As insurers will now see you as higher risk, it's worth thinking a bit smaller and lowering your risk elsewhere: smaller engine, lower value and less desirable.

Yes, it's annoying. But getting back on the road is priceless, so it could be worth this compromise to get the quote you need.
