Connected insurance (also known as telematics or black box insurance) helps good drivers save money on their insurance just by driving carefully.

The technology also lets low-mileage drivers pay based on their mileage, giving them more control.

You fit a small, self-install device in your vehicle to collect data on either how you drive or how much you drive (if you're a pay-per-mile customer).

How Ticker works for new drivers, older drivers, van drivers and convicted drivers

Your initial insurance quote works much like a traditional policy: you choose to pay either monthly or annually, based on all your personal details. We trust that you're a good driver because you're happy to share how you drive, so we may be cheaper than other quotes.

How you drive over the year then lets us reward you at renewal if you've driven well.

  1. You'll get the Ticker device through the post within a few days of your policy starting. You install the Ticker device in your car, following the instructions we'll give you.

  2. After you've installed your Ticker device, you'll start sending data on how you drive - for example, your speed and smoothness.

  3. You'll then see feedback in your Ticker app to help you keep track of how you're doing.

  4. At renewal, you’ll get a good driving discount if you’ve driven well.

This way of insuring has helped many drivers get more affordable insurance, and Ticker is making it work for even more groups of people.

How Ticker works for pay-per-mile drivers

With pay-per-mile, you pay an upfront cost to protect your car from damage or theft and then pay monthly for the miles you actually drive.

You then plug in the Ticker mile tracker and start seeing your journeys in the Ticker app. Once a month, you'll see your bill for the miles you've driven.

This way of paying for insurance is a lot like having a smart meter: you can see and manage your mileage costs easily.
