The fill-in-the-blanks template is created within the learning activity: Learning bite. It lets learners complete sentences by either selecting an answer from a drop-down or filling in an open text blank. The template provides clear correct or incorrect feedback once learners submit their answer.

What is a fill-in-the-blanks activity?

A fill-in-the-blanks activity allows learners to actively engage with written content by completing missing parts of a sentence.

You can use two types of blanks:

  • Multiple-choice blanks (MPC): learners select an answer from a drop-down

  • Open question blanks: learners type their own answer

Both options can be combined within a single activity.

How to set up a fill-in-the-blanks activity

To use the fill-in-the-blanks template, you need to create a learning bite and add a Fill-in-the-blanks activity in Studio.

  1. Go to Control > Content > Activity

  2. Create a new learning bite or open an existing one

  3. Add a Fill-in-the-blanks activity

You can now configure the activity using the fields below.

Configure the fill-in-the-blanks fields

The Content ID for the interactive video template is automatically generated.

You can find it directly in the URL while editing the template in Studio.

  2. Look at the page URL in your browser

  3. Find the value that appears after template/

The Content ID is for internal reference only. It is not visible to learners and cannot be edited.

Structure the content with paragraphs

You build the activity using paragraphs that combine text and blanks.

Available paragraph elements

  • Text:
The main sentence text. This is where blanks appear and where learners read the content.

  • MPC (multiple-choice blank):
A drop-down blank where learners choose the correct option.

  • Open question:
A free-text blank where learners type their answer.

You can add multiple paragraphs and mix MPC and open question blanks as needed.

Feedback behaviour

The fill-in-the-blanks template supports both correct and incorrect feedback.

Each feedback type includes:

  • Title (text only)*: Short headline for the feedback message

  • Text (rich text)*:
    Descriptive feedback content that supports:

    • Bulleted and numbered lists

    • Hyperlinks

    • Bold and italic text

πŸ’‘ Tip:

If you don’t need different explanations, you can use the same feedback text for both correct and incorrect answers.

πŸ”₯ Important things to know

  • Learners must complete the blanks before submitting

  • Feedback is shown immediately after submission

  • You can combine multiple blanks in a single activity to increase difficulty

πŸ’‘ Inspiration for use

You can use the fill-in-the-blanks template for:

  • Knowledge checks during or after learning content

  • Language learning and terminology practice

  • Step-by-step process validation

  • Short assessments without breaking learning flow

It works especially well when learners need to actively recall information instead of just recognising it.
