Question
When I 86 an item, why doesn't it 86 itself in another menu?
Answer
If you 86ed an item in one place on your menu but find it's still available elsewhere, it's a sign of duplicate menu items. These menu items are typically the product of a deep copy, and though they may have the same item name, you can tell they are duplicates if they have different menu ID numbers in Toast Web.
We recommend removing duplicate menu items and replacing them throughout your menu with a shared menu item. This will make it so that when the item is 86ed in one area of your menu, it'll also be updated wherever else the item is used. In addition, all item sales will be consolidated into one line item in your menu reporting.
Note: If your duplicate item has different modifiers attached or a different pricing structure, consider shallow copying the item instead. To learn more, check out this Support Center article: Reuse or Copy Menu Items and Modifiers.
To remove duplicate items:
In Toast Web, navigate to Menus > Bulk management > Items database.
Select the Items tab at the top of the page
Search for the name of the duplicate item.
Select the first item with the duplicate name. Then, in the Name field on the item details page, add an asterisk (*) at the end of the name. This item will act as the shared item that is used all across your menus, and adding the asterisk just makes it easier to find later.
Save your changes.
Navigate back to the items database.
Search for the name of the duplicate item again. We're going to go through each of the duplicate versions of the item and replace them with the shared version.
Find another version of the duplicate item (not the one you added an asterisk to) and select the magnifying glass to the left of the item name. This will open a window that shows you where that item is used in your menus.
Select the location where the item is located. In the example below, the menu item is located in a modifier group called Side Choice.
This will bring you to the group details page. Scroll down to where the item is listed (either on the list of items or the list of modifiers, depending on where on your menus this item is listed).
Select the drop-down arrow next to the + Add button and then select Add Existing Modifiers/Items.
Search for the item you added an asterisk to, and add that shared item to the group.
Now you'll have two versions of the item added -- the original duplicate version, and the shared version with the asterisk. Select Edit, and then select the X next to the duplicate item (that doesn't have the asterisk).
Save your changes.
Repeat steps 6-14 to replace all duplicate items with the shared item.
Then, navigate back to the items database and search for the item name.
Select the checkboxes for all of the duplicate versions of the item (without the asterisk).
Select Archive.
Select the shared version of the item, then remove the asterisk from the item name and Save.
Save and publish your changes when finished.
