Count Classifications: How to Create, Draw & Edit

Count classifications are used when you need to count objects, such as doors, windows, fixtures, devices, or equipment. The default output is Count (Each), and you can optionally add additional outputs (like area or perimeter) when you provide the necessary dimensions.

To create a new count classification:

  1. Go to the Quantities Panel
Go to the Quantities Panel on the right side of the Drawing Editor.

  2. Add a new classification
Click the “+” button next to the search bar.

  3. Select “Create Count Classification”
    This opens the classification editor.

  4. Set classification properties
In the Create Count Classification window, set up the classification details:

    • Name: make it clear and specific (e.g., “Door Type A”)

    • Color & Shape: choose a color and symbol style that’s easy to see on the canvas

    • Output Quantities and Units:

      • Count is the default output

      • You can add additional outputs as needed, such as Total Height, Vertical Area Length Side, and Volume (these require the appropriate dimension inputs)

    • Classification Dimensions (Optional): input the dimensions (e.g., Height/Width/Length) so Togal can calculate additional outputs like area/perimeter/volume from each count item

    • Classification Folders (Optional): organize by trade, phase, or CSI division

  5. Save the setup

After the setup, click Save. Your Count classification is now ready to use.

Draw a Count Takeoff

  1. Activate the count classification
Double click the classification name or single click the count icon in the Quantities Panel to activate it.

  2. Place count items
Click on the drawing to place a count marker on each object you want to count.
Each placement adds the total count for that classification.

  3. Review totals
Check the updated totals in the Quantities Panel.

Edit an Existing Count Classification

Use this when you need to change the name, appearance, outputs, units, or dimensions of the count classification.

  1. Locate the classification in the Quantities Panel

  2. Right-click the classification and select “Edit” to open the editor

  3. Update properties such as:

    • Name

    • Color / symbol shape

    • Output quantities and units

    • Dimensions (used for calculated outputs)

  4. Save the changes
