The Togal Button: Togal's Automated Takeoff

The Togal button is Togal’s built-in automated takeoff workflow. When you click the green Togal button at the top of the screen, Togal runs AI takeoff and places the measurement results onto your drawing and into the Quantities Panel.

It gives you a fast starting point for takeoff, freeing up estimators from tedious manual tracing into a fast, automated process. You can then review, reclassify, and edit as needed, and focus on higher-level analysis.

What the Togal Button Can Generate?

When you run the Togal button, Togal automatically generates takeoff results in three categories: Togal Areas, Togal Lines, and Togal Counts.

Togal Areas

Footprint

  • The total square footage of the floor/ceiling footprint (overall slab/plate area).

Net Area

  • The interior finish area of each room (usable room area, excluding wall areas).

Gross Area

  • The total “buildable” room area measured from wall centerline to wall centerline (includes wall zones within the room boundary).

Doors Area

  • The total square footage of door openings, typically calculated using door opening dimensions (commonly used to deduct openings from finishes).

Togal Lines

Doors Centerline

  • A linear takeoff of each door opening (useful for door opening length, and for calculating opening area when paired with door height).

Wall Centerline

  • A linear takeoff of wall centerlines across the plan (useful for partition length and wall-based estimating).

Wall Perimeter

  • A linear takeoff tracing along wall faces/edges (commonly used for base, finish edges, or perimeter-related scope).

Togal Counts

Togal also generates counts for common repeated objects in the following four categories:

Plumbing Fixtures

  • Examples: toilets, sinks, showers, urinals, etc.

Doors

  • Examples: single swing, double swing, sliding, shower doors, etc.

Furniture

  • Examples: beds, equipment, and other furniture items shown in the plan.

Appliance

  • Examples: cooktops and other appliances shown in the plan.

How to Use the Togal Button

  1. Prepare your project
    Create your project and upload the drawings.

  2. Verify the scale
    Ensure the drawing scale is set correctly before running automated takeoff.

  3. Run automated takeoff
    Click the Togal button. You can select to takeoff All Feature or Custom the specific items you need. Processing typically takes 10-15 seconds depending on drawing size and internet speed.

  4. Work in parallel on other pages
    You can’t stop Togal while it’s running, but you can continue working on other tasks and come back later to review the results when processing is complete.

  5. Review results on the drawing and Quantities Panel
    Selected takeoffs are added to the drawing and the Quantities Panel, where you can reclassify and finalize your takeoff.

Tip: You can select only the automated takeoff types you want by checking the boxes before you run the Togal button.

Best Practice

Use AI results as a starting point: quickly review what was generated, then reclassify and edit where needed to match your scope and reporting structure.

Both of these features use AI to transform tedious manual tracing into a fast, automated process of review and confirmation, freeing up estimators to focus on higher-level analysis.

Understanding and Training the AI

While Togal.AI’s artificial intelligence comes pre-trained on millions of construction drawings, its performance can be further improved and customized through your use and feedback. The AI learns from the corrections and classifications you make.

How the AI Learns?

The AI uses a concept often called “Human in the Loop” or “Active Learning.” Every time you use an AI feature, you are providing it with valuable feedback.

  • When you use Auto-Classification (“Find Similar”):

    • If the AI suggests 10 items and you de-select 2 of them as incorrect, you are teaching it what not to look for.

    • If you accept the other 8, you are positively reinforcing its correct identification.

  • When you use AI Wall/Area Detection:

    • If the AI misses a wall and you manually draw it in, the system can learn from this correction for future drawings.

    • If you re-classify a wall that the AI initially assigned to the wrong type, it learns to better differentiate between those types.

Implicit vs. Explicit Training

  • Implicit Training: Most of the learning happens implicitly and automatically in the background as you use the software. Your everyday actions of creating, deleting, and classifying takeoffs constantly fine-tune the AI models.

  • Explicit Training (if available): Some advanced platforms may offer an explicit training module. This would be a dedicated area where you could, for example, upload a new, unusual symbol, tell the AI “This is a Type X-2 Valve,” and have it instantly learn to recognize that symbol across all future projects.
