What is a paywall?
A paywall is a digital barrier that restricts access to software features or content until a user pays a fee, typically a one-time purchase in photobooths. It serves as the "checkout counter" where developers monetize their work.
Soft vs hard paywall
A soft paywall (QR after session) is a flexible digital barrier that gives users a "sneak peek" or limited access to trigger the sessions and see content before requiring payment. This allows users to explore the product's value firsthand. It is commonly implemented through "metered" access, such as watermarks.
A hard paywall (QR before session) is an absolute barrier that prevents the users from starting a session if no payment has been made. The user won't be able to see how the final product will be until the session is paid.
Continue to read the article to see how this is configured.
How is the paywall implemented in Touchpix
Paywall is integrated directly in Touchpix as a feature, requiring a few steps to set it up and create a seemless pay-per-session environment. Connect a Stripe account to Touchpix to receive the payments directly in your account and choose your currency. Once configured, funds from each sale are transferred instantly to your account, minus a small service commission.
Commission Structure
Enterprise License: 5% per transaction.
All Other Licenses: 10% per transaction.
How to set up your paywall
Once your paywall lincense is active, the steps to follow are very simple, yet it requires to understand in firsthand how it works.
A stripe account is required, register one in Stripe official site if this has not been set up yet. Complete the required information and forms to receive payments in your account
In your event settings, find "paywall" and connect your Stripe account to Touchpix
Once your Stripe account is connected, activate "enable stripe payments" in the toggle above
Choose the correct currency to avoid market exchanges
Set up a price for each session type and the paywall type you want to configure.
Set an alphanumeric password to secure your photobooth. Using this password, you will be able to exit the paywall mode in the app and access the event settings. After exiting the paywall with the password, step 3 must be repeated to re-activate the payments.
Users can pay directly through the web gallery or at a designated sharing station to access or share their content.
Now, as simple as this your paywall is already set up. However, the configuration shall be more detailed, so let's dive into your options.
Paywall type
There are three different options for the paywall type. You can either prompt the payment screen before the session, after the session, or for printing. Here are all three explained:
Before session: A QR code is displayed on the app screen for users to scan with their devices and reach the payment platform. After each purchase a session trigger QR is given to the users on their device, which shall be scanned by Touchpix camera to start the session.
After session: Any session available can be started, but the final output has a watermark. After sharing, the user will see the file by clicking the link to the gallery, prompting to purchase the asset to remove the watermark, authorizing a clean file download for sharing.
Print: A QR code for purchases is displayed when the print button is pressed on the sharing screen. No watermark in these outputs, so digital sharing can be done like always.
Session configuration
Here, you can select the sessions that will require a payment. It is important to note that you have to enable both the photo or video function, and then choose here whether you want to apply a paywall to each session or not. For instance, slomo and photo functions can be enabled and be shown in the app screen, but you can decide if only one or both shall be paid (only for "after session" type).
Enable among the different sessions which ones will require payment, and set a fixed price for each session.
Customization
One of our signs of identity is the ability to customize the software as much as possible to include as much branding and marketing as you want. This option is not far behind, since you can also customize the UI by adding a title, description, change the text color, and background.
Paywall link
Here you will find the link and QR code that redirects to such link to access the payment platform. You have the option to display it in the app to invite the users to start a session, or print it out to display it in any other place.
Keynotes
A small service commission is charged on each transaction, being a 5% for enterprise license and 10% to other licenses.
The currency is unique, only one currency can be selected per event.
Although the payments are started in Touchpix app, these are handled by Stripe and its payment platform. Stripe terms and conditions may apply.
