Live Scoring (Mobile Scoring)

Updated this week

This feature is only available with the following products:

Live scoring is a great way to elevate the "player experience" for your events and leagues. Rather than entering scores at the end of a round and producing the final results, scores can be entered during the round by golfers on the mobile app while producing a live leaderboard in many places like the portal, TV Display, and the Golf Genius App or Golfshot App (Players Only).

Live scoring is not just limited to Stroke Play and Match Play. It can be used virtually for every format available in our software including skins, bracket events, multi-round tournaments, linked tournaments, and more.

In this article, we will discuss how to set up and manage live scoring for your events and leagues.

Enabling Live Scoring:

Note: For details unique to utilizing the Golf Genius App or Golfshot App, click the appropriate link.

After finishing the setup for a round (e.g., creating pairings, setting the course/tee, creating tournaments, etc), move the round to "In Progress" under the Rounds Menu. If using the mobile app for score entry, enable mobile app score entry as well. These two options are shown below.

The leaderboard for the round will now be live.

Overview of the Live Leaderboard:

Once moved to "In Progress", the leaderboard updates every 10 seconds and produces a real-time live leaderboard. Take a look at the Stroke Play leaderboard below.

A few things you will see on a live leaderboard:

  • A message at the bottom of the leaderboard indicates when the scores were last updated. A blue "In Progress" icon also confirms that the tournaments are "in progress".

  • There will be a "Thru" column indicating how many holes have been completed. If there have been no holes completed yet, the starting hole/time will be displayed instead.

  • For Stroke Play leaderboards, a "To Par" column will be included.

Match Play leaderboards will display differently. The "Match" column will indicate the live status of each match in the middle (as shown below).

Entering Scores:

There are a few different methods of score entry for live scoring:

  • Players enter scores on the mobile app: Using the mobile app, players in every pairing group can enter their hole-by hole-scores throughout the round, which will update the live leaderboard. For details on this method, Click Here.

  • Players enter scores on the Golfshot App: Using the Golfshot app, players in every pairing group can enter their hole-by-hole scores throughout the round, which updates the live leaderboard in real-time. For details on this method, Click Here.

  • Staff members or volunteers enter scores on the mobile/iPad app: Our Scoring Stations feature allows staff members/volunteers to enter scores on the mobile/iPad app for their assigned holes. Click Here for details.

  • Entering Scores on the Manager Site: If entering scores on a laptop is preferred over the mobile/iPad App, staff members can go to Rounds > Enter Scores to enter scores through the Manager Site. Click Here for details.

Displaying the Live Leaderboard:

There are multiple ways to display the live leaderboard to your audience.

  • Portal: Your audience away from the golf course can go to the event/league portal and view the live leaderboard on the All Tournament Results page or Customized Tournament Results page. For a quick link to the live leaderboard on the portal, go to

.GolfGenius.com/lb. When /lb is appended to the url, we will search for the "In Progress" round and display the leaderboard.

  • TV Display: Your on-site audience can view the live leaderboard on TVs located throughout the property. Whether these TVs are on the golf course or in the clubhouse, the scrolling leaderboard will keep your audience up to date on all the scoring. For a quick link of the TV leaderboard, go to

.GolfGenius.com/tv. For more details on the TV Display, Click Here.

  • Mobile App: The live leaderboard can be viewed on the mobile app by the players and spectators. If the players are entering scores on the mobile app, they will have full access to the live leaderboard on the mobile app. Even if players are not entering scores on the mobile app, they (and the spectators) can still log in to the mobile app with the event/league GGID (found in the Event/League Profile) and view the live leaderboard. Click Here for details.

  • Embedding: If you'd like to display the leaderboard on a website other than the event/league portal, you can embed it. Click Here for details.

Changes During Live Scoring:

After enabling live scoring, you may occasionally need to make changes or corrections to your event or league setup. Some common examples include player name changes, adjustments to the Handicap Index, tournament setup modifications, and changes to course details. These changes can all be made while the round is "In Progress". After making the change, the leaderboard will be updated accordingly.

Marking Scorecards as Checked (Disabling Mobile Score Entry):

When using live scoring and groups hand in their scorecards, you may want to ensure they can not get back into the mobile app to "update" their scores. If you go to Round > Enter Scores, find the pairing group that submitted the scorecard, and you will see an option to mark the scorecard as checked (as shown below).

When selected, the scorecard will be considered verified, and score entry will then be disabled for that pairing group through the mobile and iPad apps. Furthermore, this option can be used for auditing purposes, allowing managers to view which scorecards have been verified and checked (as shown below).

Additionally, when marking scorecards as complete, the score entry page for the pairing group will be timestamped when the scorecard is marked as checked (as shown below).

Finalizing a Round:

Once all the scores have been entered for the round, go to the Rounds Menu and move the Round Status to "Completed" (as shown below).

The leaderboard will then update one final time and produce the final results (as shown below).

When the round is moved to "Completed", the following takes place:

  • Ties are broken if a tie-breaking method has been established.

  • Points and Purse will be awarded (Note: Points/purse earned in Match Play tournaments are awarded while "In Progress").

  • "Thru" column disappears.

If mobile app scoring is used, also ensure that mobile score entry is turned off under the Rounds Menu. Otherwise, players will still be able to access and change their scores if the scorecards were not marked as checked.

Managing Multi-Round Tournaments Using Live Scoring:

If you are managing a multi-round tournament, and the round has been moved to "Completed", you will be given the option to immediately move the next round to "In Progress". In most cases, you will want to do this. However, there are cases where you may want more than one "In Progress" round at a time. An example would be a Member-Guest Invitational using tee times where some Round 1 matches are still in progress, while others have already begun. In that case, Rounds 1 and 2 should be marked as "In Progress" concurrently until Round 1 can be moved to "Completed".
