Overview
The in-app AI chat appears whenever you're viewing a patient (e.g. on Topics or other patient pages). It is not a separate page. Desktop : the chat is in the left panel alongside the main content. Mobile : the chat may appear as a panel, slide-out, or chat icon—tap to open it when you have a patient in context.
Accessing Chat
• Where it appears : Desktop — Chat is in the left panel of the app when you're in a patient context (e.g. after selecting a patient and opening Topics or another patient page). Mobile — Open the chat from the chat icon or panel control; it appears in a panel or overlay when you have a patient selected.
• No separate route : You don't navigate to "Chat"; it's always available alongside the main content (Topics, topic pages, etc.).
• Default : On desktop the left panel shows Chat by default; on mobile, use the chat entry point to open it.
Chat Features
Threads (Conversations)
• You can have multiple conversations (threads). Use the thread selector or conversation list to switch between them or start a new one.
• When no thread is selected (or you're in a new chat), you may see an empty state with suggested prompts or a welcome message to get started.
Model Selector
• You can choose which AI model to use for the conversation from the model selector in the chat UI. This affects how the assistant responds.
Composing and Sending Messages
• Type in the chat input at the bottom of the chat panel (left side on desktop; in the chat overlay or panel on mobile) and send your message. The AI responds in the same thread.
• Streaming : Responses can appear gradually (streaming) as they're generated.
• Markdown : Messages may support markdown formatting for clearer reading.
Message Actions
• Save to note : Use the Save action on a message to save it as a topic note. The note is stored for a health topic and appears on that topic's notes page. See the Topic Notes guide.
• Copy : Use the Copy action to copy a message to your clipboard.
"Chat About This"
• In other parts of the app (e.g. About this condition, topic information), you may see "Chat About This" (or similar). Clicking it opens or focuses the chat and pre-fills context about that section so you can ask follow-up questions without retyping the topic.
Empty State
• When you have no messages in the current thread (new chat), the chat shows an empty state —for example, a short heading and suggested questions or prompts. Clicking a suggestion sends that as your first message.
Integration with Topic Notes
• Saving messages : When you save a chat message to a note, it becomes a topic note and is tied to the health topic you choose. For creating and editing topic notes, see the Topic Notes guide.
• Context : Chat is aware of the current patient so answers can be relevant to their record where applicable.
• Chat tools : The chat can also create or edit topic notes through its tools when you ask it to add or update information for a topic.
Chat vs. Human Support
• Chat (left panel) : This is the AI chat —an assistant in the app. Use it for questions about your health information, conditions, and content in the app.
• Support (human help) : For human support (e.g. billing, account, or technical help), use Support when it's available—Desktop : in the footer of the right sidebar (bottom right); Mobile : at the bottom of the menu. That may open a separate support channel (e.g. Intercom) and is distinct from the AI chat panel.
Troubleshooting
"I don't see the chat"
• Make sure you have a patient selected and are on a patient view (e.g. Topics). Desktop : the left panel shows chat in that context. Mobile : tap the chat icon or open the chat panel from the menu.
"My message didn't save to notes"
• Confirm you used the Save action on the message (not just Copy). You need permission to add notes for that patient. If it still doesn't appear, check the Topic Notes guide and your note permissions.
"Chat About This doesn't do anything"
• It should open or focus the chat and add context. Desktop : ensure the left panel is visible. Mobile : ensure the chat panel or overlay is open and that you're not in a restricted or logged-out state. Try refreshing the page if the behavior is inconsistent.
Limitations
• The chat system cannot set reminders.
• Chat cannot communicate with external systems or services outside the application.
• Chat cannot perform actions in the real world, such as sending email or making phone calls.
• Chat cannot replace professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment decisions.
