Introduction
The Enhance feature within the video editor provides you with a range of video editing tools; some provided by Topaz Labs and some by Pencil. They range from straightforward upscaling to more complex frame rate adjustments, noise reduction and more.
When you have a video open in the Editor you will see the 'Enhance' button in the top left corner of the workspace.
Clicking on it will reveal a new side panel with the dropdown at the top allowing you to choose which image editing provider's tools you wish to access:
Topaz Labs AI Enhance
Topaz Labs provides a sophisticated set of tools for video editing, correction, restoring and refining. They have long been regarded as one of the best in class providers of AI enhancement tools and their video offering is known for its ability to enhance clarity, reduce noise and smooth motion.
Topaz Labs offers the following tools:
Video Type
Choose the relevant video type that matches your source:
Progressive: The whole image is drawn at once, and is the standard for modern videos - clearer, smoother and well suited to most digital formats.
Interlaced: The image is drawn in alternating lines - common in older TV broadcasts and some DVDs. Can appear flickery or striped without deinterlacing.
Progressive Interlaced: A hybrid in which Interlaced footage has been partially converted.
Parameter mode
Choose how settings are applied:
Auto: Topaz Labs automatically applies its recommended settings
Relative: Recommended settings are applied but you have the ability to control weighting
Manual: You have full manual control over the various parameters
Field Order
This applies to interlaced footage only, controlling how alternating video lines are handled:
Auto: Will detect and apply the correct order
TopFirst
BottomFirst
Enhancement Options
This gives you the ability to upscale your video by up to 3x. For example, selecting 2x will double the resolution of your video
Focus Fix Level
This tool uses AI-based sharpening to correct mild or heavy blur:
None
Normal
Strong
Compression
This allows you to reduce compression artefacts like blockiness or banding from low-quality files. The percentage slider allows you to choose how much 'clean up' you wish to apply.
Detailing
The Detailing tool can help recover fine textures and edges. Increase the percentage for more visible detail, but note that too much may look unnatural
Add Noise
Using a percentage slider Add Noise allows you to add subtle grain for a more natural look, or to help hide banding in flat areas
Noise Reduction
This can be used to remove grain or digital noise. Higher values produce smoother results but can reduce texture
Halo
The Halo tool reduces bright outlines around objects caused by over-sharpening or compression. It is generally a good idea to use carefully
Anti Aliasing
This tool can help smooth jagged edges and stair-step lines, especially on text or diagonal lines
Blur
The Blur tool softens the image to reduce harshness or blend imperfections. It is often most useful at low levels; higher values can make footage appear out of focus.
Grain
The Grain slider adds film-like grain to the image for a natural or vintage look. It is often used to blend footage
Grain Size
The Grain Size slider adjusts how fine or coarse the added grain appears. Higher values create larger, more visible grain.
Preserve Details
The Preserve Details slider protects small features from being smoothed out during enhancement. Higher values lead to more texture being retained.
Slow Motion
The Slow Motion tool allows you to create a slow motion effect from 1x to 16x, with the AI model interpolating the additional frames.
Frame Rate
Frame Rate allows you to set the number of frames per second (fps) generated in the output. You can either match the source footage or adjust for smoothness.
Detect Duplicate Frames
Switch this on to have the AI model automatically find and remove repeated frames to improve smoothness and reduce flicker.
Duplicate Threshold
The Duplicate Threshold slider controls how similar frames must be to count as duplicates. Lower values catch more subtle duplicates.
