Our volunteer tutoring platform can be broken down into four essential steps:

Step #0: Volunteer tutor registers

The volunteer tutor signs-up and creates their profile via the "For volunteers" page:

Step #1: Student signs-up and requests a tutor

The student (or pupil as we like to call them) signs-up and searches for tutors via the "For students" page:

After filtering through the available tutors, they'll send lesson requests to those they want tutoring appointments with.

Students receive a confirmation email for each lesson request that they send with:

  • Their prospective tutor's bio (i.e. their "Education and Experience").
  • Links to the tutor's (verified) social media accounts (e.g. their LinkedIn, Facebook, GitHub, Instagram).
  • The tutor’s verified (via an academic email address) university (e.g. “Verified Duke University Email Address”).

Step #2: Parent approves of the pupil-tutor match

When the student sends a lesson request, we send an email to their parent(s) asking for parental approval:

Parents receive emails for each of their child's lesson requests with:

  • The tutor's bio (i.e. their "Education and Experience").
  • Links to the tutor's (verified) social media accounts (e.g. their LinkedIn, Facebook, GitHub, Instagram).
  • The tutor’s verified (via an academic email address) university (e.g. “Verified Duke University Email Address”).
  • Options to run (and pay for) various background checks (e.g. a state-wide sex offender lookup or DBS check).

Only after the parent vets the tutor's background and approves of the lesson request do we proceed to Step #3.

Step #3: Student and tutor meet via Bramble

After we receive parental approval for the lesson request, the tutor and the student receive an email with a link to their Bramble room and instructions for how to make the most out of their virtual tutoring session:

Their virtual-tutoring room will be reused weekly until the tutoring lesson is canceled. Learn more about Bramble here.
