Please note that we also have a native, HTML5 web option now that is highly recommended. We would like to retire all installs in the near future; please let us know if that is a problem for your school, so we can take your needs into account.

If you have Chromebook carts where the same Chromebooks are used by different students throughout the school day, you will need to install it as a Kiosk application. This is because otherwise the Chrome OS will re-install Tyto Online on every different student account that logs in, and you will run out of room on the Chromebook!

Using Kiosk apps, Tyto Online will be installed once and students log into the Kiosk app instead of into their regular accounts. They can then log out and into their regular accounts for normal usage.

Installing the App

Once your Chromebooks are enrolled, installing the app in kiosk mode is very simple.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Devices and then Chrome management.
    If you don't see Devices on the Home page, click More controls at the bottom.

  3. Click Apps & extensions.

  4. On the left, select the organizational unit where you want to configure settings.
    For all users, select the top-level organization. Otherwise, select a child organization, such as if you want to allow the app only for certain grades (depending on your internal organization set up). Initially, an organizational unit inherits the settings of its parent.

  5. At the top, click Kiosks.

6. Click Add (the yellow circle with the + sign in the bottom right corner) and choose Add from Google Play.

7. Search for “Tyto Online” and click Select.

8. If prompted, accept the app permissions on behalf of your organization.

9. In the panel on the right, set the app and extension policies. Learn about each setting. The default settings are usually fine, and you should be good to close the tab.

10. Click Save. This won’t always appear, though, so don’t be concerned if you don’t see the prompt after installing the app on your Chromebooks.

Now, every Chromebook enrolled under those settings should have that app automatically associated with it (assuming the app in the Kiosks tab is set to “Installed”).

IMPORTANT NOTE: You will want the setting the “Auto-launch app” section of the Kiosks tab to “None”, as this will allow the Chromebook to start up as normal. Assigning an app to auto-launch will make it initialize every time the Chromebook is powered on. You may do this during testing, but for using Tyto Online regularly, you want students to be able to go in and out of Kiosk mode on their own so need this setting off.

Launching the App on Student Devices

On the Chromebook’s sign in screen, in the bottom left corner of the screen, there should be a tab called “Apps”, with a grid-like symbol on its left side. Click the icon to see all kiosk apps approved by the admin account, and select Tyto Online (com.immersedgames.tyto_online) to open it.

To be clear, students should not sign in on the Chromebook should they wish to access your kiosk apps. If they are already signed in, they will need to sign out to access the Kiosk app.

The first time the app is initialized will take a long time, as it will every time the app is updated on the Play Store. This is normal, as it’s re-downloading the app at that time. Speed is dependent on your network, but we find it takes around 20-30 minutes on slower internet and can be as fast as 4 minutes on very fast internet. Subsequent iniitializations, barring an update, should take around 15 seconds.

Closing the App

To properly close Tyto Online in Kiosk mode, just hold the Chromebook’s power button and select “Power off” or “Sign out”. Trying to quit the game normally will simply restart it.

Internet Needs

Please ensure the following URLS are whitelisted, which include our services and analytics:

  • *.tytoonline.com (i.e. tytoonline.com and its subdomains)

  • api.ipify.org

  • heapanalytics.com

  • d288oy8b0055ty.cloudfront.net

The game only uses these two ports: 80, 443.

Also, some web filter software such as Lightspeed may identify the game communication as P2P and block it. If this happens, the following IPs will need to be specified to allow game communication:

  • 54.89.25.0

  • 54.226.22.86

  • 3.227.169.30

Troubleshooting

Make Sure the Chromebook Has Enough Space for Tyto Online

Tyto Online takes up around 1.2 gigabytes of the Chromebooks space. Be sure the device has enough space to accommodate. This is especially tricky in Kiosk mode, as not having enough space will result in the first initialization appearing stuck. Clearing up space and re-initializing should resolve the issue.

Don't Let the Chromebook Sleep during Initialization

If the initializing Chromebook falls asleep during the initialization process, the install of Tyto Online as a kiosk app will actually error out, with no warning to the user. This is due to the internet connection lapsing when sleep mode triggers. The Chromebook will fall asleep when left idle for around five minutes, or if the lid is closed.

Slow Subsequent Initializations

Through the Admin Console, select Devices, then select Chrome Management on the left side. From here, click on Device Settings and it should bring you to a new window. In this new window, you want to scroll down until you find a setting called User Data. Make sure this is set to “Do not erase local user data”. If it’s not set to this, the game will have to be re-downloaded every time a user initializes it.

Update Schedule

We do have a scheduled update process for new content we are adding to the game. For example, adding a new Module over winter break that teachers can use in Spring. The planned annual update schedule is:

  • New School Year Update (mid/late August)

  • Winter Update (over winter break based on schools' schedules)

  • Summer Update (after the school year ends we may opt to do an update for students or teachers using the product over the summer, especially if we are testing new content for the following school year!)
