A digital asset is an asset issued and/or transferred using distributed ledger or blockchain technology. When such a digital asset meets the definition of a security under federal securities laws, it is referred to as a digital asset security and is regulated by the SEC. Digital asset securities can be represented by digital tokens on a blockchain and offer the same rights as traditional securities.
