Background
When you created a website in the past, your site will have been created in the editor which was most recent at the time. That means you may have one or more sites in the v1 or v2 editor. To learn more about the different editor versions, have a look at this article.
To make use of our most modern features, performance, and design updates you can upgrade to the v3 editor. We will not remove access to the old editors for as long as they are used, so the migration is entirely optional. However we are no longer making improvements to the older editors.
Instead of requiring another disruptive migration in the future, we will be making incremental updates to the v3 editor instead of releasing a separate v4 version.
Before you Start
We want to highlight two important things about this process.
The migration process will not change your existing site at all. A new site will be created in the new editor.
Your website visitors will see the old site until you also transfer the domains.
This means that migrating your site will not disrupt your live site or force you to make quick decisions. Once you have created the new site, you can take as much time as you like editing it before you transfer the domains over.
Step 1 - Locate the migration tool
To start with the migration, go to the Umso dashboard, find the site you wish to upgrade and click on the three-dot menu. Then click on "Migrate to New Editor" as shown in the area "B" in the screenshot below.
Step 2 - Start the migration process
Once you have clicked on "Migrate to new Editor" you'll see the migration tool page. This can look different for v1 and v2 sites but both will always be migrated to v3. Review the information on the migration page and click the upgrade button. The tool will create a new site for you as described on the page.
Step 3 - Review Results
Open your newly created site in the editor and review the results. Your site should be ready to go without any further edits but you may wish to make some adjustments or use the capabilities of the new editor right away.
Once you're happy with everything you can go ahead and publish your site. Your site will publish to it's own .umso.co subdomain until you transfer the domains of the old site. This way you can also test your. new published site in the browser before making the switch.
Step 4 - Transfer Domains
Once you're ready to send your visitors from the old site to the new one, you can use our domain transfer tool. Go to the dashboard of your original site, click on "Domains" and then on "Transfer Domains" as highlighted on the screenshot below.
This will open a popup window for the domain transfer. Follow the steps 1-4 that you see on the screen and then click on "Transfer". This will immediately move your domains from the original site to the new one and any visitors to your domains will see the new version. There are no DNS changes required and the change is instant.
Optional: V1 Sites with Blog
If you are migrating a v1 site that has a blog, you will need to re-create the blog template pages. This is quick and simple and explained in our blog setup article. Just select your existing blog during the setup flow.
Step 5 - Review
If you followed all of the above steps, your site transfer is now complete and the site is live in the newest editor. You don't need to do anything else and can get started familiarizing yourself with the new editor if you haven't already.
Cleanup
You no longer need the old site and can delete it if you like, but we recommend keeping it for reference. To avoid confusion between the old and new sites you may want to rename the old site if you're keeping it.
Site Status & Subscription
Your new site will have the same status as the old site, including pro sites.
If you have a paid subscription, your subscription will cover both the old site and the new site. You will not be charged extra.
If you delete either of the sites, your subscription will not change.
If you downgrade either of the sites, this will change the status for both the old and the new version as they share one subscription.
