Understanding the Stock Movement Enquiry

The Stock Movement Enquiry displays your inventory's financial journey through a series of columns that follow the logical flow of stock movements. Starting with your opening Stock On Hand (SOH) value, the report shows how purchases add to your stock, how sales and adjustments reduce it, and how various cost factors impact the final closing value. Each column represents a specific type of transaction or cost component, allowing you to trace exactly how your inventory value changed during the selected period.

Stock Movement Enquiry grid columns

Description

Year

Displays the year the enquiry's result is from.

Month

Displays the month the enquiry's result is from.

Opening SOH

Shows the total inventory value at the start of your selected period. Calculated using quantities multiplied by Average Landed Cost (ALC) at period start. Cross-reference with Stock on Hand Enquiry using your "Date From" value.

plus Purchases

Total value of Purchase Orders received during the period. Includes receipted goods minus any Supplier Returns. Based on receipted dates rather than transaction completion dates. Verify details using Transaction Enquiry with "Purchase Order," "Purchase Order Recost," and "Supplier Return" filters.

less Cost of Goods Sold

Total value of inventory dispatched on Sales Shipments. Represents stock leaving your warehouse through sales. Cross-reference using Transaction Enquiry with "Sales Shipment" filter.

plus Credits

Value of stock returned through Credit Notes. Represents inventory coming back into your warehouse. Verify using Transaction Enquiry with "Credit Note" filter.

plus Stock Adjustments

Total value changes from Stock Adjustments and Stock Takes. Includes both positive and negative adjustments. Cross-reference using Transaction Enquiry with "Stock Adjustment" and "Stock Take Adjustment" filters.

plus Other Costs

Captures additional cost impacts, including import costs, assemblies, and warehouse transfers. Accounts for ALC variations that occur during the period. No single report breaks down this figure; it is calculated as a balancing item.

Closing SOH

Total inventory value at the end of your selected period. Cross-reference with Stock on Hand Enquiry using your "Date To" value.

Understanding "Other Costs"

Other Costs represents the difference between your actual stock value changes and the sum of individual transactions. This occurs because:

  • Opening SOH uses ALC at period start.

  • Closing SOH uses ALC at period end.

  • Individual transactions use ALC at the time each transaction occurred.

Calculation Formula: Other Costs = Closing SOH - Opening SOH - (Purchases - Cost of Goods Sold + Credits + Stock Adjustments).

Example:

  • Opening SOH: $100,000

  • Closing SOH: $300,000

  • Purchases: $200,100

  • Cost of Goods Sold: $500

  • Credits: $0

  • Stock Adjustments: $0

Displayed Costs = $200,100 - $500 + $0 + $0 = $199,600

Other Costs = $300,000 - $100,000 - $199,600 = $400

The $400 represents ALC variations that occurred during the period.

Hidden Columns

Go to Show Toolbar > Hidden Columns in the Stock Movement Enquiry and use the check boxes to decide which columns in the Stock Movement Enquiry should be displayed or hidden in the grid. By default, the ALC Change column, showing how ALC changes in other warehouses affected your closing stock value, is hidden.

Troubleshooting tips

  • If results seem inaccurate, verify that all transactions for the period are complete.

  • Large "Other Costs" may indicate significant ALC changes; investigate using the Transaction Enquiry.

  • Missing data may indicate filter settings are too restrictive.

  • For detailed breakdowns, use the cross-reference reports mentioned in each column description.
