What happens if a fax matches more than one routing rule?
Updox applies only one rule to each fax. It checks your rules in order from most specific to least specific, and uses the first rule that matches. It stops checking after that, so it never applies two or more rules to the same fax.
How are rules matched?
Rules can match fax numbers in four ways:
Match type | What it checks | Example |
Exact | The whole 10-digit number | (212) 340-1338 |
Exchange | The first 6 digits | (212) 340-xxxx |
Area code | The first 3 digits | (212) xxx-xxxx |
Any | Any number | — |
In what order does Updox check rules?
Updox checks rules in this order and uses the first one that matches:
Order | To number | From number |
1 (most specific) | Exact | Exact |
2 | Exact | Exchange |
3 | Exact | Area code |
4 | Exact | Any |
5 | Any | Exact |
6 | Any | Exchange |
7 | Any | Area code |
8 (least specific) | Any | Any |
Tip: Any rule with an exact To number (orders 1–4) is checked before rules that match any To number (orders 5–8).
Example: which rule wins?
Say you have these three rules:
Rule | To | From | Action |
A | Any | (212) xxx-xxxx (area code) | Tag Green |
B | (877) 555-3481 (exact) | Any | Tag Red |
C | Any | (212) 340-xxxx (exchange) | Tag Blue |
A fax comes in from (212) 340-1338 to (877) 555-3481. It matches all three rules:
Rule B is order 4: exact To, any From.
Rule C is order 6: any To, From exchange.
Rule A is order 7: any To, From area code.
Rule B is the most specific match, so the fax is tagged Red. Rules A and C aren't applied.
Can I create two rules with the same match?
No. Updox won't let you create two rules with the same matching criteria. That way, two rules at the same level can never conflict.
Example: You can't have both of these rules:
Tag any fax from (212) xxx-xxxx Green
Tag any fax from (212) xxx-xxxx Red
