Patient Portal: How Patients Request Restrictions on Their Health Information

How patients use Patient Portal messaging to ask their provider to limit who can access or receive their health information.

What is a restriction request?

A restriction request is when a patient asks their provider to limit who can access or receive their electronic health information (EHI), such as certain providers or organizations.

Why does the Patient Portal support this?

The HTI-1 Final Rule requires certified EHR technology to support patient requests to restrict how their electronic health information is shared. Updox meets this requirement through secure messaging in the Patient Portal.

How does a patient request a restriction?

  1. Log in to the Patient Portal.

  2. Go to the Messages tab.

  3. Start a new secure message to your provider.

  4. In the message, explain which information you want restricted and who you don't want to have access to it.

  5. Send the message.

What happens after the patient sends the request?

The message goes to the practice like any other Patient Portal message. The practice reviews the request and responds to the patient.

Note: Each practice decides whether it can honor a restriction request, based on its own policies and applicable regulations.
