As part of UpHabit’s series of Book Reviews and Recommendations about being a thoughtful Super Connector, we’re pleased to share what we’ve learned from J. Kelly Hoey about connecting for success in the social media age in her book Build a Dream Network. UpHabit’s a Personal CRM for thoughtful Super Connectors and those that aspire to be one!

Kelly's book is full of great thinking and tips to help build your personal network. Her forward was by Tom Peters, author of In Search of Excellence (one of the earliest business books I ever loved).

Just some of what I loved from Kelly's book...

Networking is work. You Can’t Hack Relationships. Networking is hard because it involves people. Focus on people.

Truths of networking:

  1. an essential and continual activity

  2. you control the effort but not the outcome

  3. networking is everywhere

Give forward. Help others. “Community” means like-minded people getting together, having fun and helping each other out so they can reach their goals.

Networking is a process in which you engage. It’s all about the effort you put in to build relationships and generously share your skills or expertise, know-how and time. You can’t control the outcome.

Make sure all your networking activities are working for you by aiming all (and I mean all) your networking actions towards your goal.

...and the Six Ps of networking...People, People, People, Persistence, Planning and Politeness.
