The classic notion that networking is a "help first, ask for help later" relationship has been bastardized by those that burden others in the pursuit of being helpful. Asking someone how you can help them best adds a burden on said person; now they must do on-the-spot work and give a flawed answer. Its vital to get to know the person you want to network with and understand how you could help them. Offering them something they need will solidify your relationship.
