Sway (Pitching)

What it is:

When the pitcher shifts their weight back, swaying backward laterally (toward 1st or 3rd base, depending on handedness) during the leg lift.

Why it matters:

Sway creates extra movement that disrupts timing and balance. It often causes late drives and inconsistent release points.

Good mechanics in this phase look like:

  • Staying stacked over the back hip without drifting backward.

How to address it:

  • Drills: No-stride balance drill, mirror work, step-and-throw.

  • Cues: “Stay stacked,” “Keep your weight over your back hip.”
