High Hand (Pitching)

What it is:

When the throwing hand stays too high/vertical during the arm action.

Why it matters:

Disrupts timing, can cause loss of command, and increase joint stress. If the forearm lays back back sufficiently, it provides a greater range to accelerate through.

Good mechanics in this phase look like:

  • Hand moves smoothly through arm slot, not “stuck” above the head.

  • Natural arm slot matching body mechanics.

How to address it:

  • Drills: Arm-slot mirror drills, rhythmic throwing drills.

  • Cues: “Relax the hand,” “Match slot to your body.”
