Early Release (Pitching)

What it is:

When the pitcher lets go of the ball before full extension or before rotation is complete. Release should be in front of the lead foot.

Why it matters:

Reduces velocity, decreases spin, and makes control erratic. Can also give the batter more time to read the pitch.

Good mechanics in this phase look like:

  • Ball released out front with full extension.

  • Consistent timing in relation to trunk rotation.

How to address it:

  • Drills: Towel drill (focus on hitting target out front).

  • Cues: “Release out front,” “Finish the throw.”
