When creating a funnel, you may want to include multiple offer types. Understanding the differences between these can help you to craft a funnel that maximizes customer engagement and order value.

What is an Upsell?

An upsell is an offer that, when accepted, will replace the item in the cart with the offered item. This is ideal to use if you are offering an upgrade of the product the customer is purchasing. If more than one upsell is used in a funnel, then the subsequent offers will be treated as cross-sells.

Suppose you are selling coffee, you may want to upsell a customer with a larger quantity.

What is a Cross-sell?

A cross-sell is an offer that, when accepted, will add an additional item to the cart and leave the original item untouched. This is ideal when you are offering related products and accessories. You can use as many cross-sell offers in a funnel as you'd like.

For example, say you are selling a coffee maker. You may want to cross-sell a customer on a bag of coffee to go with their purchase of a coffee machine:
