This use case lets you view all available historical road segment count data, centralized by road segment. This data can be found by searching for a road segment by name or clicking directly on the road segment via the map. Searches can be narrowed in the sidebar not just by road segment name, but also by data type (speed or volume), posted speed, data year obtained, street class, or any other attributes you might be interested in. Segments can also be colored by ADT in the sidebar.

The kinds of road segment count data available for reporting are:

  • Speed percentile

  • Single-day average speed

  • Speed table, by interval

  • Volume table, by interval

If you have any questions about this use case, please get in touch with us:

  • Via live chat: by clicking on the speech bubble in the sidebar at the bottom left corner of the screen

  • by phone: +1 833 872-2647

Finally, please remember that the data points and screenshots in this Use Case Help Center article below are fake synthetic data. We take data security very seriously.

How to search for a road segment

You can find any road segment by searching the name in the sidebar or navigating the map.

If available, you can use the Data Source filter on the sidebar to locate road segment data from a specific traffic data source. If this is not available for your UrbanLogiq instance, don't hesitate to contact your Customer Success Representative to work on adding it!

You can use the Time Period filter on the sidebar to locate road segments with data within a selected range. Just so you know, the queried results will have data within the data date range selected but do not necessarily have data for every day of the data range.

You can also use the + Add Filter on the sidebar, if available, to query road segments with specific data attributes.

Pro Tip: The calendar component tells you the Available Dates range of your agency's road segment count data.

Pro Tip: Use the timeline feature at the bottom right of the map to see the distribution and gaps of your road segment data by the data source.

How to generate and interpret a road segment report

Extracting insights from a road segment report is made easy by the UrbanLogiq platform. Follow the steps below:

  • Step 1: Click on the road segment of interest on the map.

  • Step 2: Fill in the dates for the preferred data source in the pop-up panel.

  • Step 3: Click Report and begin analysis!

❗ Note that when generating reports for continuous data collected from traffic camera sources such as TrafficLogix, a calendar can easily query date ranges similar to the calendar from the time range filter. This calendar will show you the available date range for the selected intersection data. You can click on any date shortcuts on the left side of the calendar component to select the most recent week, month, and year data. Dates that are greyed out in the calendar are not available. On the bottom left of the calendar, you can easily see how much data is available for analysis in the selected date range.

In a typical road segment report, the following out-of-box charts are available:

  • Single Day Count card shows the counts for a segment at any time in a given day for multiple directions.

  • Multi-Day Count card compares counts and shows trends across selected dates for any direction of interest.

  • Speed Statistics card summarizes different speed statistics for a selected date, including 85th percentile speed, max speed, mean speed, mode speed, and speed limit, depending on the data.

  • Average Daily Traffic (ADT) card calculates the average daily traffic for your selected dates. Using the date drop-down in the card, you can calculate ADT for weekdays, weekends, or any range if there's data.

  • Peak Hours card shows the peak hour, peak hour volume, and peak hour factor for the selected date. Peak hour is calculated using the All Vehicles class and applied to each road user. Each period is defined as follows:

    • AM: 00:00 - 10:59

    • MID: 11:00 - 13:59

    • PM: 14:00 - 23:59

❗ Note that if a road segment's raw data (such as the original consultant data file) does not have All Vehicles class, the road segment report will not have a peak hour card.

  • Multiple Days Average Speed card shows a weighted average speed value for each time increment bucket in the 24-hour day (12:00 AM - 11:45 PM).

    • The weighted average is calculated by averaging the speed bins with counts in the provided consultant reports (i.e., 0-15pmh, 16-20mph, etc.) and weighting according to the number of vehicles counted in each speed bin.

    • Gaps in the chart indicate zero vehicles being counted in a given time increment bin, and therefore no speed value was posted.

    • The above information is accessible through the info icon ℹ️ by the chart title.

  • Count Table shows the speed and class data for the selected date and direction. When peak hour info is available, you can check the Show Peak Hours checkbox to highlight peak hours in the table.

Mini-map: Use the mini-map feature inside the report (located in the top right corner) to reference geo-contextual information when reviewing the analytics. You can close the mini-map by clicking the 'X' button, and re-activate it by scrolling to the report's top.

How to view consultant or raw data

Click the Export button in the road segment report header to view export options. Select Consultant Reports to access the consultant files provided by your city (❗Note that this Consultant Reports option won't be there for reports generated from traffic camera sources such as Trafficlogix).

Select Raw Data to view the data in the simplest form. You can also export the report as a PDF, a functionality we are constantly improving on.

Here's what each export looks like:

  • Consultant Reports: As you probably know, consultant reports take various forms. This downloaded file will look different depending on the consultant who collected the data.

  • Raw Data (CSV, XLSX): This simple but robust file with columns including timestamp, turn, count, and road user types. Depending on whether speed data is available, you will receive raw data for both speed and volume for the road segment.

  • PDF:

How to generate and visualize traffic metrics using road segment data

As mentioned in the above section, you can view the ADT and PHF information for a specific road segment for the selected dates.

To gain insights across all the road segments, you can generate traffic metrics such as Average Daily Traffic (ADT) using the road segment data from the Metrics tab, if available to you and your UrbanLogiq instances.

  • Step 1: Navigate to the Metrics tab on the sidebar.

  • Step 2: Pick a data source if that's an option. Fill in the date range information.

  • Step 3: Hit Run.

Map: Click on any intersection/road segment to view the detailed ADT values for the location. You can filter the road segments on the map based on the ADT values in the legend by adjusting the toggles or inputting the range of ADT values directly in the text boxes under the legend.

Report: The report summarizes the top 10 locations with the highest ADT values.

That's all for now! Log in to the platform and start your Road Segment Analysis! Happy exploring!
