The New York Places Data Hub allows users to view all available business district analysis data organized by the business improvement district.

The kinds of data available for reporting are:

  • Business in your BID

  • Business categories in your BID

  • Businesses closing or opening within the past 30 days

  • NYC 311 Issues

  • Tax lots

  • Foot traffic and visit dynamics (coming soon)

If you have any questions about this use case, please get in touch with us:

  • Via live chat: by clicking on the speech bubble in the sidebar at the bottom left corner of the screen

  • by phone: +1 833 872-2647

Finally, please remember this is a pilot platform currently. More features and data points will be added moving into the future. We thrive on feedback, so please give your product feedback and even feature requests in the Live Chat!

Data Sources & Update Cadence

Where do all of these datasets come from?

The benefit of the NYC Places Data Hub is that data comes from various sources, giving you a complete view and understanding of your BID. The platform is agile enough to add new data sources as time progresses. If a new data set or provider is added, a data source description will also be added to this help center article.

Storefront Businesses Data: this dataset is coming from LiveXYZ. This dataset is dynamic, as trained LiveXYZ Mappers walk the streets identifying storefront business changes.

We pull this dataset every week. Specifically every Monday at 5:00 AM PST. To make sure you know, just because we pull an updated dataset from LiveXYZ every week does not guarantee that all of the streets in your BID will be updated weekly. Due to the LiveXYZ data collection methodology, geographical size, and diversity of BIDs, we pulled this dataset weekly to regularly provide the most equitable data updates to the broadest number of BIDs.

Storefront businesses are some of the most dynamic data to work with. We chose LiveXYZ because of their in-person method of mapping this data. Finally, they also want to work with you to help make the dataset better; if there is a storefront business you do not see on the map, you can fill out this feedback form here to get it added.

Issues, Crime, and Land Use Data: In your Business District Reports, you can see the issues, crime stats, and land use data. All of these data sets are coming from NYC 311. The Issues and Land Use data sets get updated monthly. Meaning on the first of the month, we will ingest the previous month's data. For example, on the first of August, July will be ingested. The New York Crime Data is updated on a Quarterly cadence.

Foot Traffic Data: This fan-favorite data set will be live to all BIDs by the end of the month, and many more insights will be coming soon. Placer.ai provides the platform with insightful foot traffic data. Placer.ai attains this foot traffic data by collecting geolocation data from mobile devices.

In the Foot Traffic report, we distinguish between employees and non-employees. The Placer.ai algorithms define work locations as repeated visit patterns during weekdays (both multiple days in a single week and over longer periods). The algorithm periodically checks to confirm that devices still "work" at the location. Once validated and labeled as a user's primary work location, each visit is tagged with that workplace if (a) the queried location matches the user's workplace; and (b) if the location's distance from the workplace is less than 150 meters.

You can learn more about Placer.ai right here. This data set is updated on a monthly cadence.

Those are the data sources baked into the Business District Analysis report. Still, in partnership with Small Business Services, we have additional data sources to help, which can be found in our Community Hub! Ginkgo was chosen because their data management tools further enable BIDs with data! You can learn more about Ginkgo below.

Adding New Users To Your BID

Each Business Improvement District in New York City gets two users per BID. To create a new user, visit https://urbanlogiq.typeform.com/nycplaces or click the below button.

The form is quick to fill out. We only need a name, work email, and BID the user will work in. Once the form is complete, your new user will receive a New York Places Data Welcome Email, from UrbanLogiq, in their inbox in 24 hours. Once you fill out a new user workflow, your new user will also receive a Ginkgo Welcome Email.

Ginkgo - Location Intelligence for Place Managers

Ginkgo is a map-based cloud platform that centralizes the data management tools and information sources that enable you to measure and keep track of your BID's impact on the neighborhood.

Visit https://ginkgo-signup-nycbids.carrd.co/ to get started. Once your BID's Ginkgo account is set up, you can link it to the NYC Places Data Hub to synchronize your data analysis and reporting workflows.

If you need support for your Ginkgo account, visit the support center: https://ginkgo.zendesk.com/hc/en-us.

Your Community Hub

The Community Hub is the main login page for your New York Places Data Hub. It consolidates all of your data products in one easy-to-use place.

In partnership with NYC Small Business Services, multiple technology and data providers have come together to enable all NYC Bids, big and small, to leverage data to improve their services and help their stakeholders!

Your Community Hub is where you can access your Ginkgo and Property Shark accounts! In your Community Hub, you can also go directly to your business and issue reports for your business.

If at any time when using the platform, you have questions about the tool, datasets, or even requests on how we can make the tool better, click the speech bubble on the bottom left corner.

Business District Analysis

In your Business District Analysis tool, you can toggle between Storefronts and Issues selection in the left side panel. This will change the points on the map to purple dots representing a business and red dots representing a 311 issue.

This default map view is a great way to understand your BID without the need to walk up and down the city blocks!

You can zoom in on the map to see a more granular view. Click on a purple business dot, and a pop-up window will appear, giving you in-depth business data, such as a phone number, description, website, and category.

If we change our Map View to Issues, we can see all the New York City 311 Issues which have occurred.

By clicking on a red issues point, another pop-up window will appear with critical information, such as its Unique Key, Created date, Complaint type, and more.

Multiple issues may arise in one location, and when this occurs, there will be toggle buttons at the top of the panel showing how many issues overlap in this location and the ability to click through them.

Business District Report

Your Business District Report is an ever-evolving and updating report. To access your Business District Report, click the big blue Generate Report button on the left panel.

With the help of multiple technology and data providers, we offer insights organized into four main categories: Storefront businesses, Issues, Foot Traffic, and Land Use.

We strive to add new data insights to your Business District Report.

As new data insights are added to the Business District Report, they will be updated in this Help Center article. Types of data insights included in the Business District Report are listed below.

Report Customization

It is important to remember that at any time, you can click the Export button and then select UrbanLogiq Report (pdf) to share this data with other stakeholders, like concerned businesses or even board members.

The data in this platform is a mixture of your BID and open data, so you can share it with whomever you deem appropriate.

The report is slightly customizable. The data card tiles you see in the report can be re-arranged by dragging them with your mouse.

Additionally, the view of the data can be changed by clicking the pencil icon to change the bar chart style.

If you want to dig deeper into the data on a data tile, we recommend you click the table icon on the left-hand side.

This will change the chart into a table view; this can be helpful for datasets with multiple categories or if you desire to see specific numbers and stats.

That's all for now! Log in to the platform and start your analysis! Happy exploring!

As always, feel free to contact us if you need any help. Please chat with us from the help chat box in the platform, or send your questions to customersuccess@urbanlogiq.com!
