Tap to Pay lets you accept in-person contactless payments directly on a supported phone or tablet, with no separate payment terminal.
What Tap to Pay is
With Tap to Pay, the customer taps their contactless card or mobile wallet on the device, and the device reads the payment using its built-in NFC reader. The device itself acts as a software-based payment terminal, so you do not need to order, deploy, or manage dedicated hardware.
Tap to Pay is built on Adyen's mobile SDKs and processes payments on the Adyen platform. Your POS app integrates the SDK and starts each transaction through the Adyen Terminal API.
How it works
At a high level, a Tap to Pay payment follows the same in-person flow as a terminal payment:
Your POS app creates a Terminal API payment request.
The request is passed to the Adyen mobile SDK on the device.
The SDK activates the device NFC reader and prompts the customer to tap.
The customer taps their contactless card or wallet.
Adyen processes the payment and returns the result to your POS app.
Because payments run on the same Adyen platform as your other transactions, you manage and reconcile them the same way.
Supported platforms
Tap to Pay is available on two platforms, each with its own integration path:
Tap to Pay on Android, using Adyen's Mobile SDK for Android. See Tap to Pay on Android ▸ Overview.
Tap to Pay on iPhone, using Adyen's iOS Mobile SDK with Apple's Tap to Pay on iPhone. See Tap to Pay on iPhone ▸ Overview.
Each platform has its own device, operating system, and account requirements. Review the Requirements article for the platform you are targeting before you build.
Getting started
Tap to Pay must be enabled on your account before you can use it. Valpay provisions and enables Tap to Pay on your Adyen account, including the test environment. Contact Valpay Support to have your account configured and to receive the credentials you need.
