This guide walks through the complete first-time setup of a Xovis sensor using the built-in Setup Wizard. Source: Xovis Knowledge Base. The wizard covers all essential configuration steps in sequence — complete it in order for best results.
Step 1 — First login & change password
Open a browser and enter the sensor's IP address.
Select Admin profile (full access) or Reader profile (read-only) from the dropdown.
Default password:
password— change this immediately to a strong password following your company's security policy. The wizard starts automatically on first login.
Step 2 — Region
Set the country and measurement units (metric or imperial). This affects how mounting height is entered and how tracking bubbles are displayed. Enable Xovis Product Improvement to help Xovis improve detection algorithms — recommended.
Step 3 — Date and time
Configure NTP time synchronisation. Xovis strongly recommends using the default NTP pool (pool.ntp.org). Do not use a local Microsoft timeserver — it is not compatible. All sensors in a multisensor must be synced to the same NTP server.
Step 4 — Network identification
Configure DHCP or static IP. If switching from DHCP to fixed IP, the sensor will immediately come up on the new address — update your browser URL accordingly. Set the sensor Name (e.g. "TR – Maslak Enza Entrance") and Group (e.g. "TR"). These appear in Xovis HUB Device Control.
Enable Fallback to 192.168.1.168 so the sensor remains reachable if DHCP fails. If that IP is already taken, the sensor uses the next available address.
Step 5 — Mounting height & tilt
Enter the exact mounting height (floor to sensor front panel). Accuracy must be within ±5cm — incorrect height causes miscounts.
PC-Series: Measure with a laser distance meter. Enter the height and overwrite current tilt by clicking ▼ → Save.
PF-Series: Automatic height detection using a measurement point. By default the point is at the centre of the sensor's view. Adjust only if needed — the point must be entirely on the floor and ideally perpendicular below the sensor.
Step 6 — Image setup (PC-Series only)
Three masks are configurable. The floor mask is mandatory.
Floor mask | Draw over all visible, walkable floor. Keep distance from walls. Never draw over obstacles (chairs, shelves, people). After drawing, a recalibration is created — apply it manually in step 7. |
Taboo mask | Hard exclusion — areas are completely invisible to the sensor. Use for scene boundaries (walls, doorframes). Not for general tracking exclusion — use exclusion masks in Scene Configuration instead. |
Illumination mask | Excludes very bright or dark areas from the sensor's exposure calculation. Use for bright windows, dark corners, or spotlights that distort the overall illumination reading. |
Rotate scene option: if the sensor is mounted facing the wrong direction, rotate the scene in 90° increments here.
Step 7 — Recalibration (PC-Series only)
After drawing the floor mask or changing the mounting height, apply the new recalibration. A recalibration is required whenever:
The floor mask has been redrawn
Mounting height has changed
Sensor tilt has changed by ≥1° in X or Y axis
Click Apply recalibration to activate. Check the stereo image — the floor should appear as a homogeneous blue area.
Step 8 — Privacy level
Level 0 | No restrictions — live video and full tracking shown. Not recommended for production. |
Level 1 | No live video stream (still image only on request). Tracking shown. Recommended minimum. |
Level 2 | No image at all (grey background). Tracking bubbles only. |
Level 3 | No image, no tracking — counting values only. Maximum privacy. |
Important: Lowering the privacy level always requires the Sensor Master Key (SMK) — a unique key per sensor, only available from Xovis after a verified request. Set the privacy level correctly during installation — do not assume you can lower it later without the SMK.
After the wizard
Once all steps are complete, click Finish wizard. You are redirected to the sensor overview. Next steps:
Configure counting lines and zones in Scene Configuration (see Xovis — counting line & zone placement)
Activate the HUB Device Control connection to Vemcount in Settings → Remote connections
Add the sensor MAC address in Vemcount Settings → Devices
