Image Edit Prompt Templates

Strong image-edit prompts follow a simple structure: state the change, then state what to preserve. Start with the goal, name what must stay the same, then describe the specific edit. These templates put that into practice — fill in the brackets.

The core templates

  • Object: "Change [object] to [new state], keep [X] unchanged"

  • Style: "Transform to [specific style], while maintaining [composition/character] unchanged"

  • Background: "Change the background to [new background], keep the subject in the exact same position and pose"

  • Text: "Replace '[old text]' with '[new text]', maintain the same font style"

Build every prompt from a change list + preserve list

Whatever the edit, structure it as two parts:

  • Change list — what is changing. Be specific: name the object, the new state, the new property.

  • Preserve list — what is staying the same. Name every element that should not move: facial features, lighting, camera angle, composition, style.

Close with a catch-all like "keep everything else unchanged" — this single line prevents the model from re-rolling elements you never asked it to touch.

A relight template

  • Relight: "Change the lighting to [new lighting, e.g. soft golden-hour from the left], keep the subject, composition, and colors unchanged"

Lighting changes touch the whole image, so the model wants to re-render everything. Naming the new lighting direction and the "keep everything else unchanged" line is what locks the rest in place.
